Ever been to Alaska? Minnesota? Idaho? Wyoming? How do they make it!!

Dude it's just snow and cold.....you bundle up, breakout the heaters/fire, hot coco and ride it out. If you NEED to get to the store you roll the bro dozer with chains. It's not rocket science, millions of M'uricans do it every year. It's really not that big of a crisis unless someone can't figure out how to stay warm.

At around 3:30 a.m. on Monday, the National Weather Service issued blizzard warnings throughout the Northeast, including in Boston, Hartford, Providence and New York City, for what the organization is calling a “crippling and potentially historic blizzard” which is expected to really begin Monday evening into Tuesday. The the announcement says to expect heavy snow and blowing snow with blizzard conditions, with snow accumulation from 18 to 24 inches and possibly higher in New York, and up to 36 inches in Boston and Providence, temperatures in the low 20s and wind gusts up to 55 miles per hour.

The warning for New York City reads:

Light snow will begin this morning… with accumulations of 1 to 3 inches possible by sunset. Snow will pick up in intensity Monday evening… with the heaviest snow and strongest winds from about midnight into Tuesday afternoon.

Impacts… Life-threatening conditions and extremely dangerous travel due to heavy snowfall and strong winds… with whiteout conditions. Many roads may become impassable. Strong winds may down power lines and tree limbs.

At issue here is Vetteman running around like Henny Fucking Penny because the Governor declared a state of emergency and told people to stay off the roads for their own safety or face prosecution (mostly for hindering clearing efforts and endangering others). In short, hunker down and ride it out, don't be an asshole and go out in 40-50 MPH winds and whiteout conditions.

How you got from there to "it's not a natural disaster" I'm not quite sure. We are talking about 40-50 MPH winds and 4-6" of snow per hour. That's a blizzard by anyone's definition, and definitely life threatening if you manage to get caught out in it. Hence the reason for the State of emergency and travel restrictions.

It's a state of emergency because the area where I live in Jersey mostly gets 2-4 inches of snow that melts usually within a few days. 24-36" of snow in a 24-48 hour period is catastrophic because the average is less than that for an entire season. regardless if it all melts or not many of the affected areas simply aren't prepared for the amount of snow we're going to get. I expect the area to be more or less paralyzed for a couple of days. More if power service is affected. That will be the thing that could cause the most casualties. Not everyone has alternatives for heating if the power goes out. Especially in the city.

Thankfully we're prepared. Our pantry is always well stocked and we won't have to worry about losing heat unless the gas main takes a hit. Since it's buried that isn't likely.

Usually it takes a natural disaster to declare a state of emergency.

It's a blizzard for sure....but a blizzard is not a mile wide F5 tornado hitting a major city....a 200ft wall of water wiping a coast clean....hurricane leveling/flooding a state.....or an earthquake crushing a city.

All those things kill hundreds if not thousands of people and usually leave tens of thousands homeless. THAT is a fucking emergency....

I can't even find anything on the internet about a blizzard actually destroying a town.....some damage and a hand full of deaths (unless you go back like 100+ years ago).

Why should this one be so much more dangerous/deadly/devastating?
