What is your definition of a hippy?

I consider myself an old hippy. I came of age in the late 60's, early 70's. I lost my hippy ways through the 80's but am coming back into my own in the last 5 years or so.

When you hear it, what do you think?

I will admit to all of it except the self-absorbed. When your belly is full and you have a comfortable place to be, it is much easier to look at yourself and the world around you.

I think the movement had much to do with the advent of easily accessible birth control, drugs and war.

It was anti-establishment. The adults of the time were morally homogonous and the hippy movement was questioning what they had been taught: the sexual mores, the prevailing religious beliefs and government policies.

Chilled Vodka! I was wondering when you would get here.

Men and women were getting a sexual freedom that they never had before. Fuck fest was a part of it. Exploration.

Not that this has anything to do with your question, but I get called a hippy sometimes, and I am not. It annoys me. Just because I am a Grateful Dead fan, and I followed them around the country for 7 years, doesn't mean I am a dirty fucking hippy. :)

Really though, I am not very hippy. I take showers and I only like falafel every so often. I can't live on that shit. sorry.

Not everyone from that period had those beliefs, it was a minority of individuals who recieved an inordinate ammount of attention. There were many of us from the same time period who went to school, worked hard and didnt consider ourselves hippies. By 1969 the hippie movement was over. By the 70s certain behaviors born of that time became mainstream.

I think of me..just kinda mellow go with flow...fuck it attitude. I am not what someone said a "dirty" hippy I take showers have a job (non- conformist of course) a child, husband and responsible but I feel I am a hippy born to late....I love everything about it...but the best part is I am who I am...don't like OK...like it OK either I don't care not here to please anyone but me,and make sure my kids become productive ppl. :nana:

I think there are many people still living under the definition of "hippy". In Spain, there is an entire social class of (mostly) young people called "okupas" (squatters) who live outside the moral borders of society. The are usually homeless, beg or scrounge dumpsters for food, and live commune-style in abandoned buildings.

But to most of them their lifestyle is a conscious choice to be outside the capitalist system. They are also very friendly, generous people.

hippies

Ok, first thought -> Pot.

Second thought -> washed up old geezer that cannot adjust to the world as it has become.

Hippies fit several of the following qualifications:
Vegan
Potsmoker
Green Party
Unshaven women
Anti-establishment
Birkenstocks (sp?)
Nudist (with the body of a nudist)
Can play the guitar
Northern Californian

When I had long hair I was getting very upset when some one called me hippie. I was so upset one time that the person who called me hippie end up missing few teeth... but I was only upset because some one told me to be upset when I'm being called a hippie :D

That make sense only to metal crowd I guess ...if at all ...:p
I do have a somewhat pacifistic mentality...

Some of them, Senor Gil... but in Canada, we were merely poor campesinos too! :D

What do I think of - REALLY good dope, music and cumming of age, sexually at 19... in 1970! :D

Missed Woodstock, went to a big one a 3 months later. Iron Butterfly opened, the Stones closed. The cops filmed a guy ODing to death. Was in SanFrancisco for the Nixxon administration. Moved to the woods when he resigned and cut off my freak flag. Grew it back as you can see.
You can't keep a good hippie down ;)

:D My cumming of age was 1971- As I remember the question at college was.....do you want Mexican? or Columbian?:D

My parents were hippies in the late sixties. My sister was born in '71 and I followed in '75. I was conceived in a commune in Tennesee (so I've been told) but my folks moved to a smallish town in northern Illinois about the time I was born so that my sister and I could be raised in a more normal fashion (she being about ready to enter school at that time).

But they never lost their ideals. Even to this day my mom is a hippy at heart, and you won't find a more gentle and loving person anywhere on the planet.

I'm glad they were hippies. I'm glad they took a love-child approach to life. It made me a better person to be raised by them and I envy them the years they had living their dream.

Most of us never get that.

(By the way, they worked their asses off living that life. Communal living on a farm is no picnic.

And they were very clean, too.)

Yep, I remember that. 'Cept it was a bit different for me--You want Tai stick or an OJ?
Cool man! Look at all the pretty tracers! Right fucking on! They got the radio tower with that one! Man I got the munchies. Any C-rats left?

Later that same year, on top of Letterman hospital Persidio San Francisco,"You lock the door man? I'm to damned stoned to go over and look."

It would have been safer being a hippy.
Comshaw
