Hello From My Englishness

I get that, unsurprisingly the seriousness of several real life issues as inevitably found its way into lit, whether that's checking on friends health/metal well being in lockdown/ the myriad tanglement that is race relations/police brutality.

It does detract from some of the stuff that makes lit fun, sexual innuendo/PM's etc but at the same time shows that now matter how dark it can get, there is still some light and some good people around here.

Very true!

And now it is school holidays. What joy!

For me too I think that navigating here can expend a certain amount of energy on its own, so when you're feeling a bit low on energy with everything else, it's hard to find it for here.

I hope you find your way quietman, feel free to contribute your mundane everydays, food porn and general nonsensical ramblings here.

Anyone got a list of things NOT to do whilst pregnant? I think I'm doing pretty well ticking them off... Building a flatpack wardrobe pretty much alone was most definitely up there.

Parachuting?

You probably know all these, but I found it very interesting...and there are some cute gifs.

ETA: I would say that getting a puppy would be on that list.

Same here, though more the posting. Many of the boards I follow have been quiet recently.

Wonder if at the start of this people though 'great i can spend more time on lit', over did it and have taken a break.

For me it has been that rollercoaster of limited, to be honest very very limited, horniness and other things like keeping up with friends, checking in with people and readjusting to the current rules and regulations all made it a lot harder to pop on. Added to that working from home, looking at a laptop screen as soon as the workday is finished I want to move away from a computer screen for a little bit too.

Everyone is different of course, this is purely just me :)

It's felt different to me too, I haven't found myself drawn to Lit, or with the light-heartedness that makes it fun to be here. I'm not quite sure how to 'restart', really!

So far this is me slightly forcing myself to do it which is not a bad thing as I want to reconnect with people a little on here. The boards can have their share of rough times but the UK threads I have always found to have good people in them. So I am aiming to carve out myself a little time every few days and get chatting again.

Maybe you can show me the ropes as I'm a newbie to lit looking for community threads maybe like this. Plus I'm American looking for a new place to call home.

I know this was not aimed at me specifically but my main advice is to find the threads you connect with, you feel welcome with and foster relationships with people in them. You soon get some friendly faces and some back and forth.

Press ups or planking. I am not sure how either would work ;)

While lockdown has been about as much fun as being locked in a single room with a bagpipe troupe (and I am Scottish, I should like bagpipes but they sound terrible) I have been enjoying getting to walk around a bit. If I cannot walk about in foreign places I can do it in my own country, especially when it is not raining. So far managed a 35, 40 and 50km walks each weekend and while my legs may hate me with a passion it has been nice to be able to get out and see where I can get to in my limited little surroundings.

Anyone else been discovering new local places?

I have also been slowly working through my film collection (most of which are not entirely new) so here, in a random are, are the mini highlights:

Fargo - Having never seen it before I can see why so many people like it. Charming, clever, faintly ridiculous but not in a bad way and an amazing performance by Frances McDormand.

The Stanford Prison Experiment - Dramatisation of the experiment, it is still incredibly disturbing how much power can go to someones head when it is left relatively unchecked. Worth a watch if you can find it.

John Wick 3 - A film designed primarily to make you go ouch. And it made me go ouch. Great action film, and technique during some of the sequences is ridiculous.

So now I have a choice of three films, so happy for anyone to recommend which I should pick. It is either:

Casablanca - Yeah, never seen it. I am one of those guys.
Eighth Grade - The arthouse choice.
Jackie Brown - The punch in the face choice.

Which did you end up choosing? I have not seen Eighth Grade, but have seen the other two and would recommend both. Some movie trivia for you, the terrible '90s Pamela Anderson movie Barb Wire is basically a Casablanca remake.

Can't say that I've walked any great distances, partly because I'm shielded but also because of a foot problem; however, my Airedale arrived as lockdown began and he has helped me find local pathways and fields that I didn't know existed.
My kids bought us a smart tv to help cope with shielding but I haven watched many films yet.
I never saw Casablanca, my favourite film ' the Vikings ' ( Douglas and Curtis)

We watched family favourites Top Gun and Blues Brothers this weekend.

We cobbled together an TV outside in my folks garden to take advantage of Sundays good weather.

I had not seen this reply until late last night so my interim choice was a film called Apostasy - https://www.theguardian.com/film/20...w-daniel-kokotajlo-british-jehovahs-witnesses

Genuinely impactful and had times that did illicit a reaction from me of mild disbelief. Highly recommended, and a relatively short watch too.

After that recommendation I will go for Casablanca, probably later tonight. Appreciate the review. I will of course move straight onto Barb Wire to see how the remake obviously lived up to the lofty levels of Bogart.

I am happy to hear that you have a wandering companion that has helped you explore a little. I will look out 'The Vikings', appreciate the recommendation.

So is it sacrilege to say that I have never seen the Blues Brothers? I have probably heard it far more than I have ever actually seen it...

You might also like the Fargo series - there are three, I think. The first one mirrors the film, Martin Freeman is excellent in it. Don't remember much about the second. Jesse Plemons was good in it. The third is Ewan McGregor as twins! I didn't watch Fargo (the original film) until after seeing the first series, but it was great, had aged really well, I thought.

And Frances McDormand was brilliant in "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri", what a great film.

I've seen the first series and the film, both were excellent.

Recently watched the Kursk film, that was both really good and really hard to watch. Knowing the outcome but it had be done based on the letters/journals they found when they raised it.

That sounds like a tough watch. Horrible situation. I always think the Apollo 13 story could quite easily have been a similarly tragic tale.

Morning all. What plans for the weekend?

Not a lot, getting a new sofa delivered today that's about as exciting as it gets.

What about you?

Noted, I will give it a shot and see how it goes. Normally I quite like Billy Bob's work and i understand he plays his role pretty well in it.

Agreed on Three Billboards, a mixture of anger, hate, sadness and guilt is so hard to pull off but it somehow feels pitch perfect.

Hopefully i will get some walking done, although Saturday is wanting to make it uncomfortable by daring to be a wash out. Sunday may be better, plus there is the usual fun and games of getting the house looking in a somewhat reasonable state.

Hopefully comfy new sofa time, is it bad that i sometimes judge a sofa purely on how good it is to nap on?

A new sofa could be exciting! Depends what you plan on doing on it  And whether it fits

Guest staying for the weekend for the first time - bubble! And last night making pizzas outside, a great evening with good company. Today, watching the cricket, if it doesn't rain in Manchester 🤞

I’m from the U.K., northwest area, if you wanna chat drop me a message

Welcome!

Yes, BBT was very good, just the right amount of pyschopathic evil. I hope you enjoy it.

Napping on the sofa is wonderful. They're generally not keen on you testing it that way in the shop, though. Or in ... other ... ways

Although we didn't test it fully in the shop, turns out its the perfect height and incredibly comfortable.

Broad currently frustrating the Windies in Manchester!! :D

While I enjoy the idea of trying things in fun areas I am not sure I could quite be brave enough for that. Although considering how quiet things are at the moment there is an argument that it could almost be easier to do it now than at any other time.

I still struggle to understand cricket but I am happy to hear that the sofa is living up to comfortable hopes :)

I also managed to finally watch Casablanca. While I know most folks talk about the actors, and they deserve a lot of credit, the script that underpins the whole film is incredibly good. Quick and seamless with a ton of little nods and one liners that are quite easy to miss. In a lot of ways it feels like a comedy with a side order of romance pitched in. Really good fun, and in some ways not what I was expecting at all.

Sometimes you have weeks where you wish you had chosen a profession that sounds a little easier. I have lost count of the amount of hours I have worked this week so far due to a major email outage at a client and I am exhausted it is fair to say. I am even writing this to you lovely people while also keeping half an eye on another screen and keeping the fingers crossed.

This has also meant the background noise factor watched via Netflix has skyrocketed due to it not needing any form of focus. This has led to some interesting facts:

24 Hours in A&E - Lovely program, but the amount of people that fall out of trees or fall off buildings is remarkable. If it has taught me one thing is that climbing anything taller than 1 storey is probably a bad idea.

Body Fixers - So much hair dye and hair falling out. Now I am not blessed with follicle abundance by any means but wowsers, some people really like to dye their hair.

Hope you have all had a better week than myself so far, my plan tonight is to get smashed on Ben and Jerrys and Cadburys giant buttons. Alcohol is not really my thing but my sweet tooth is my vice and I probably deserve a little bit of indulgence.

I have also decided to be a bit brave and book a trip to Norway, after all if I am only probably going to get away once this year may as well go somewhere insanely expensive!

You've booked Norway when you live in Scotland - sinful  You have the lovely Plockton and Rest and be Thankful .... nothing like champagne and sunrise at Rest and Be Thankful and ooooo mmmm memories ...... yup I think Scotland is heaven on earth - weather can be a bit dodgy but nothing foulies and fleece can't cure

I'm going so loopy here I'm learning Tarot reading and definitely well on my way to winning the lottery through manifestation. Even the dog is chewing his elbow and the patio is looking more and more like it needs replacing very, very soon.
