I used to work in an independent bookshop many moons ago and would do again if only I didn’t have bills to pay. One of my favourite things to do.... mooching in bookshop. There’s a second hand shop in Wimbledon that has books piled everywhere and a section where the lights don’t work so customers are given a torch

Please tell me they put Gothic horror and Eldritch fantasy books in that section.

It's closed now but the Anarchists Bookshop in Whitechapel used to be like that. I haven been to the Wimbledon one for a while. Long live the independent and second hand bookshops!

There is something about finding little bookshop and a few little treats inside it which is always cool. For me it is finding all the older books, the ones with the frayed pages and kitsh covers from the 80's. Where the typeface is so tiny you wonder how anyone could have read them in the first place. Also they had no problem with all the random semi nakedness on the covers either which was frequently hilarious.

Come on you are in SanFran! The wonderful Asian and Mexican food have to be #1. Go eat Chinese Food at Lai Hong Lounge. It is near Washington Square which is pretty close to you. Afterwards take your kid to Joe DiMaggio Park. Also Original Joe’s Italian is nearby. I can suggest food in SanFran for months on end.

Years and years ago I read What Colour is your parachute... they update it every year so it’s probably a very different book from the one I read but I seem to remember it was useful in trying to figure out what I wanted to do...
The other book that might be worth a read is The Second Curve by Charles Handy.

I personally think you’d be fabulous front of house at a cafe or restaurant but I guess the hours may be off putting.... or anything involving children and food - school dinner lady might not sound like a terribly sexy career but if you can find a school growing it’s own veg who might be thrilled of a knowledgeable foodie who can help the kids appreciate what they grow...

How do you feel about the med school positions? Exciting? Yay! Fills you with dread and you’re only applying because you don’t know what else to do? Life is too short... but you know that...

I read What Color Is Your Parachute? a long time ago. The Second Curve sounds interesting. I had to laugh at the idea of me being fabulous with kids. Although, in my younger days, I did teach swimming lessons and was a summer day camp counselor. I got on pretty well with the kids, but I was practically a kid myself. As for the med school jobs, it's about halfway between exciting and dread.

What a bunch of arses, to use a very British phrase. You are a lovely person and they are crazy to loose out on you. Sorry to hear about this and I will keep my fingers crossed for any future applications.

I get this. Trying to find a more family compatible job is driving me a bit bonkers, even though I'm quite happy to take a decent pay cut to do it.
As someone who regularly recruits, the best unsolicited advice I can offer is if there's a space on a form or put it on your cv, just be upfront about why youre looking for this kind of job. I play the guessing game with too many CVs. I nearly didn't interview someone who had just finished a teaching qualification because I assumed this was going to be a stopover job, and then they turned out to have decided teaching wasn't for them at all and were in fact looking for a new career path.

Good luck with your job search. I appreciate the advice.

As someone who has changed careers several times, the hardest part is getting the c.v. right.

Especially trying to remember details of the jobs that I held 20+ years ago that were not needed on my veterinary nursing CV.

I had a really good time but was helped by work gents helping with funding!

Flight club is great fun for darts based amusement, but also for a decent cocktail. No where near as male heavy as yo might expect. Decide cor yourself if that's good or bad!

lol well that sounds like a good way to do it, glad you had a good time. I should probably say that I am a male at this point so I would only be adding to the influx of testosterone issue at the bar but you know what, if it has amusements then it is well worth a nosy.

Go to Vesuvio on Columbus for a drink. It's not quite the same since they got rid of the nicotine stains from the ceiling but good to think of Kerouac and Ginsberg and Dylan Thomas sitting there getting slowly pissed (at the same time??)
