I only ask as I saw this show when I was over there and it was absolutely fantastic but no tickets available until the start of October due to it ending by the end of the year. Highly recommended though:

The Chinatown part of the city is also pretty funky (there is a parking lot where every space has a proverb in it) and I can highly recommended the evening catamaran journeys for spectacular views of the bridge:

And finally Alcatraz is worth a look, I know it is very touristy but its pretty awesome. Bar that wander the city if you can, there is some great mural art and some very unique buildings potted about. If you really want to see some fantastic murals get the BART to the mission, it is packed with them. Also the best for the best Burrittos in the city from what I remember.

I appreciate that is a bit all over the place but hopefully it helps a little bit.

Will try and dig out more, I was there for around 4 nights if I remember a few years ago so tried to pack a lot in. Oh and beware Fishermans Wharf, go to see the sea lions, do not go for the food as the prices are awful.

I have visited once years ago with a friend and stayed with friends of hers in the Mission ( when it was most definitely not gentrified.) I have visited Alcatraz, Fisherman’s Wharf, Blah blah blah but may need to revisit them with the family. I have also done Sonoma and the Red Woods.... but this time we’re heading to Yosemite and to the beach.

Now I have just remembered something that happened on that trip. We stayed with my friends Aunt and family in Berkeley. I was 32 and single. I ended up seducing my friends cousin who was about 20. ( he may have been 19 and I’ve added a year to make myself sound slightly less sleazy) I can remember creeping to his room in the night. He was a really nice guy with a brain the size of a planet. Very sweet. A couple of years later he was working in Silicone Valley and died of a drugs overdose.
I still have an email from him sitting in my inbox that I can’t delete.

Working on a big event for a few months, a lot of it in a site that had a serious amount of construction underway for it. Got my own hard hat and everything. Was cool for like 5 mins until Scotland had a ridiculously hot summer and I was stuck in a tin can with a hard hat on...

Massive congrats on the park run and the celebration, that is a hell of a milstone. My running in the gym has now achieved a pretty decent level and wondering how easy it would be to transfer that to the outdoors but my problem has always been my pacing. The treadmill takes care of that for me and that would be a whole new discipline to learn.

And thank you to all of you for being very nice and reaching out and giving the hugs, both here and all the chats in PM's that have been sent. You are genuinely a lovely bunch of people.

I had the same problem whenever I run outside, tend to start off too quickly. Other then trial and error a couple of things you could try. See if there's a running club or running shop nearby. Most are happy to take beginners or people like yourself out and train them up. Or splash out on a decent sports watch that you can program with workouts.

We do try to welcome all newcomers here. We have a weird sense of humour which doesn't always work in text. Hope you hang around.

I wear steal toed boots for roughly 40 miles a week in wet and damp conditions. Trust me that nothing feels better than taking thems mothafuckas off.

Having on occasion had to wear hi-leg combats and thick socks in hot/damp/wet weather I can agree with you there!!

Apparently, I am not a good candidate for part time work in the Specialty department at Whole Foods. Both stores to which I applied declined to hire me.

I am sorry lovely, I suspect they may have feared you over qualified and thought you were perhaps looking at it as a stopgap until something you’d prefer to do turned up... also (and I’ve seen this before) the image we have of a company is the one they want the public to see, I was taken aback years ago when I applied to what I thought was a nice, ethical company - it became clear at the interview that what they wanted was incredibly aggressive sales techniques... it was very different behind the scenes and I clearly wasn’t a good fit...

What is it about the job that appealed to you? The interaction with the public? Why whole foods? (I don’t think I’ve ever shopped in one, although I’ve eaten at a bone daddies in one - I may be one of the few peeps that goes to bone daddies for the veggie option...)

Does the speciality side you applied for call for your foodie passion and knowledge? (again - apologies, I’ve no idea how the stores work...)

Years and years ago I read What Colour is your parachute... they update it every year so it’s probably a very different book from the one I read but I seem to remember it was useful in trying to figure out what I wanted to do...

The other book that might be worth a read is The Second Curve by Charles Handy. I’ve not read it yet, but I did go to a talk by Handy about it - he’s astonishing you know, in his eighties now and sparkles like a sparkly button... the book is about how we, as individuals, need to consider we ought to have several careers not one... he talks about how companies that thrive and survive do so by anticipating and preparing for the next curve, constantly adapting. But as people we often never do that ourselves, taking the time to reassess what we want, what we can offer, what the market needs... I think (but honestly don’t know) that book touches on how we think about what we want next...

I personally think you’d be fabulous front of house at a cafe or restaurant but I guess the hours may be off putting.... or anything involving children and food - school dinner lady might not sound like a terribly sexy career but if you can find a school growing it’s own veg who might be thrilled of a knowledgeable foodie who can help the kids appreciate what they grow...

I can equally see you as a sexy librarian or working in an independent book store but those jobs are hard to come by... or in a gift shop in an art gallery or museum where you can wander amongst the art when not working - I may now possibly projecting myself now though... sorry!

How do you feel about the med school positions? Exciting? Yay! Fills you with dread and you’re only applying because you don’t know what else to do? Life is too short... but you know that...

We are coming to the end of the tourist trade up here and you can already start to see the streets thinning out. I have come to the feeling that the start and the end of the festival is when the locals get involved, the bit in the middle is for everyone else.

Talking about the festival though, with only a couple of shows left to go here are some of the highlights. Bang goes the Gun, as discussed before, was really good and already a must see for next year. Jason Byrne is an excellent comic, he has become a kind of regular for me and rarely disappoints. I do not know how much he tours the rest of the UK but if you get a chance to see him I would do so. Just do not sit near the front.

As for theater, Algorithms was a great dating / relationships / self discovery one woman play that was really well written and captured the mood of dating in a world where it feels more of a commodity than a serious pursuit at times. And the most left field option, the one that should not work in any way at all, is Cruel Intentions the musical. Taking 90's hits, slightly cheesy acting and interweaving these with the story of the film it really should not work but somehow its charming, funny and weirdly consistent. I have no idea if it will ever tour, and it is very much not highbrow, but it was a perfect slice of silliness which I would recommend.

All that is left is some secret policemen, a Sunday morning play and a Monday night bit of comedy. And possibly bankruptcy by the end of the month, but that part I can work on later. I am also feeling dog tired and very much not in the mood for work.

Week survived, rest day (ie no gym today, still cut the grass, shopping, wash and hoover out car) before starting shifts again tomorrow night.

No one can really argue with that logic SL, hopefully hasn't caused you too much issue.

Would love to work in a bookstore or something like the science/natural history museums. Just somewhere where when it was quiet you could wonder, discover or just sit and enjoy a hobby. Though would also like to learn metal/leather work. (hhmmm Birthday and Christmas present idea me thinks)

I’m sitting by the Dragon gate in San Francisco which marks the start of China town. I’ll be on the lookout for souvenirs.

I used to work in an independent bookshop many moons ago and would do again if only I didn’t have bills to pay. One of my favourite things to do.... mooching in bookshop. There’s a second hand shop in Wimbledon that has books piled everywhere and a section where the lights don’t work so customers are given a torch
