Are we allowed to post Heartstopper by Alice Oseman fan fiction, even though Nick is 18 and Charlie is 16?

No, anything involving characters under 18, even if they're aged up for the story, is not allowed.

Why not just set your story a few years into the future when they are in their 20s?

Oh, I didn't realise that. Okay, just going to have to wait until Heart Stopper gets them to Uni then. ;-)

Hang on, by the time of the events in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child all the main characters are adults in their 40s. So could you not do fan fiction based after that? (Not that I'd want to, just curious.)

EDIT: sorry, just saw you said when they "started".

Nope. That doesn't fly here on Lit. The age criteria is determined from when the characters started in the canon. That's why there's no Harry Potter fan-fic here.

If that were the whole of it, there'd still be room for fanfic about some of the older characters who are over 18 at the beginning of the story. But from some people's rejection messages Literotica has a blanket "no Harry Potter" rule, regardless of canon ages, and ditto for Simpsons and Disney.

There is a rule against ageing-up, but I think there's some discretion for characters who are shown both as children and as adults in the story. Something where the characters are under-age for most of the story would likely be rejected; something that starts with some childhood backstory but gets to the adult years pretty quickly might pass, if there's no hint of sexualising the characters as children.

There's almost no audience for fanfic on Lit anyway. A "noncommercial and nonprofit central hosting place for fanworks using open-source archiving software" would suit better.

If only such a place existed!

I know that some IP's are specifically banned from fan fiction on the site as mentioned Harry Potter, The Simpsons and Disney, but I thought fan fiction was still allowed for characters who reached the age of 18 during the course of the book series/movies/TV show? Like DJ, Kimmy and Steve from Full House all of whom turned 18 during the original run of Full House, and who of course appear as middle-aged in spin-off Fuller House.

AFAIK that's allowed, if the story's about them as adults. From what I recall, the rule is specifically against "ageing-up" characters who weren't 18 in the source material, not about banning stories about adults who have ever been shown as children.

Otherwise, it'd get unreasonable: suppose somebody wants to write a story about The Adventures of Sexy Batman. Is he off limits because his origin story involves a famous incident in his childhood? If somebody writes a story about Sheldon Cooper (permitted, he's an adult in BBT) and then a spin-off show presents him as a kid, does that story get retroactively banned here?

But if one were to write erotic Narnia fic, about characters who are briefly shown as adults but are children for most of the story, I suspect that would be rejected.

Thanks Bramblethorn, I thought that was the case with characters who turned 18 in the original intellectual property. As you said, Narnia fan fiction probably would be rejected for this reason, as would a fan fiction story about the Famous Five which is set in the late 1950s and where Julian, Dick, Anne and Georgina are young adults studying at a university in England because the original characters existed in a floating timeline in the Enid Blyton series of books and never aged.

There are some anomalies of course. For example, an Everybody Loves Raymond fan fiction piece about Ray and Debra's daughter Ally set in the present day where she is a married, 33-year-old mother of two and a sports journalist like her father and she and her husband have a romantic long weekend away in Atlantic City while her parents watch the kids sounds perfectly reasonable. Alternately, erotic fan fiction about Ally Barone set in 2009 on the day of her 18th birthday would raise some question marks. However, both would be rejected as Ally never reached the age of 18 in the original run of ELR even though she and the actress who played her are now in their early 30s.
