He likes it! Hey Mikey!!

Welcome to the breakfast cereal thread.

Cereal has been rated as a favorite breakfast food of many for years. When I want a snack, especially late at night while watching TV, I often choose cereal. If you peek in our kitchen cupboards, there are at least 5 boxes or more at all times. Some are healthier choices. Some are anything but.
As much as I have always loved cereal, I have always loved many of the TV commercials. I remember more than a few of the catchy lines, the jingles and colorful charactors as a kid. Some of them still get me as an adult.

Which favorite breakfast cereal do you reach for ?
How many lines from those old cereal commercials are still stuck in your head?
Which jingle or line of a well known cereal commercial or slogan, can you not seem to get out of your head?

I enjoyed seeing some of my all time favorites again. http://www.cereal.com/commercials.htm

My favorites:
Lucky Charms
Frosted Mini Wheats
Captain Crunch Berries
Cocoa Puffs
Sugar Snaps

Jingle stuck in my head most: "Frosted lucky charms! They're magically delicious!!".

LOL, I always say I can do without anything but my cereal first thing each day, and yes, it is also my favourite midnight snack food and the one thing I can usually eat when too sick to eat anything else. In Oz it was Vita Brits which is a wheat/grain based block biscuit made without any sugar. Here it is as close to the equivalent as I can get which is Weetabix and I think it has a little sugar unfortunately. I sometimes make Porridge in winter, and apart from those I occasionally have Rice Bubbles or Corn Flakes but they are usually rare as in months apart. Jingles? All I can think of are the Snap Crackle Pop ones of Rice Bubbles.

Second to oldest daughter attended a semester in Australia last winter. One of the things I thought was interesting to hear her tell of while she was there: food names there vs in the USA. If not for that, I'd be replying to you with, "Oh. What are Rice Bubbles?".
And, Cat'.. cereal is certainly my 'comfort food of choice' when I'm feeling under the weather too.

Ok.. that said, how do you make porridge there Cat'?
We don't have porridge here. Only time I hear of porridge for the most part has been tied to story of the "Three Bears".
The portuguese have a porridge that many here call poppies .. not certain of how we spell it though. It's basically bread, sugar and milk... warmed and mashed.

i grew up eating cheerios, total, and special k... and i liked it too

my brother and i were also allergic to suger and dairy (i outgrew the allergy when i was 12) so we didnt have sugary cerea in the house

I am a bad bad bad mom.

*hangs head in shame*

The kids were only allowed a handful of cereals -

cheerios
rice crispies
homemade brown sugar & almond granola
frosted mini-wheats
oatmeal

By the age of 5, my oldest child knew that froot loops had ___ type of red dye, ___ amount of sugar, and mom wouldn't buy it even if someone offered her a gazillion dollars, so don't ask.

Since they live with their dad now, I try so hard to not ask how they're eating... because I know the answer will be cocoa puffs, and bologna sandwiches, and corndogs... and the idea of it makes me hit "I did not breastfeed you for two - three years just so you could put crap in your body" mode. So I don't ask.

*twitch*

When I need a late night snack, it is cereal, but it's either frosted mini wheats with skim milk, or organic granola with vanilla yogurt.
Yep. I know how difficult that can be.

I understand the need to 'look the other way'.. I go through the same and have been for over 12 years. Have one who eats at McD's at least twice a week. So difficult to bite my tongue.
Cereal is my 'compromise' with the kids. There are so many things that I don't like to allow. I try to pick my battles well. The dyes and sugar are bad so I look the other way and focus on the iron and other vitamins and minerals that they do offer. Win some.. lose some. ;)

Peanut Butter Cap'n Crunch is my absolute favorite. I also like Fruity Pebbles, Frosted Flakes, any of the honey-nut things, Golden Grahams, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, etc. I am such a kid. :p

i eat Cheerios or Rice Crispies, and only dry usually. i can't stand soggy cereal. The texture totally freaks me out.

My boys are only allowed to have Life, Cheerios, or Raisin Bran. i don't buy sugary crappy cereals. IMO, they are a waste of money and i choose not to feed my kids that much sugar/dyes/chemicals. (i have a major red dye allergy so i am particularly vigilant about what they eat.)

Since i don't allow the cereal, i do allow my oldest to have another "junk food" treat once a week...be it a corn dog, Sonic, or Domino's pizza.

Rolled oats cooked on the stove in either milk, water, or a mix of the 2, better if soaked overnight first unless using the quick variety. You can also microwave them, but doesn't taste quite the same IMO. Very healthy, though not good for the waistline if indulged everyday.

As the parent in charge of grocery shopping, I kept to a simple rule. All cereals had to contain fewer than 10 grams of sugars per tablespoon. That meant that most of the brands marketed to children were off the list and so we ate lots of Cheerios, Rice Krispies (actually the generic equivalents of these), and granola. Usually I took one of the children with me in a regular rotation and he or she chose a few of the products for the family, including the weekly cereal choice for the kids.

My personal choice for many years has been to alternate between oatmeal with granola and shredded wheat with grape nuts. Sometimes I really get crazy and sprinkle some granola on the shredded wheat. ;)

Oh! Ok.. for me that's called oatmeal. I make it just like that.. oats and water with a pinch of salt in a pot on top of the stove. The instant are only good for cutting time. I prefer the course texture of regular oat to quick/instant variety.
I love Cream of Wheat too and choose it over oatmeal if given a choice.
Some call it farinha here.

When I was a smoker, I rarely ate breakfast. Since quitting my appetite is different. I started eating breakfast. I was on an oatmeal kick for a while. I will credit it for at least one of the extra pant sizes gained. ;)

BTW super yummy way to make extra creamy oatmeal is to beat an egg until the yolk is lemon yellow, cook the oatmeal/porridge about half way, then drizzle/stir in the egg and finish cooking (stirring constantly - I usually also add a small handful of dried cranberries and chopped pecans). It adds a signifigant protien boost and gets almost custardy.

Now I want oatmeal.

LOL, and cholesterol!! Plus I often have a bad reaction to eggs.

currently, i eat special K red berries when i have cereal for breakfast.

Oh God...I can't eat any of those sugared snacks.

My breakfast rarely varies...coffee no sugar and 1 oz half & half 90 calorie cereal bar or low fat yogurt and a piece of fruit.

When I was in England I really liked "Just right". Now I sometimes eat muesli (either the kind with lots of dried fruits or with chocolate).

I love this thread!

In the states, I'll eat either Cheerios or steel-cut oatmeal for breakfast. With M_Wisdom, I like to have fruit (Fruct) Muesli. I'm not particularly fond of rolled oats any more.

Tabea, I think we're thinking about the same muesli -- M_Wisdom introduced me to the brands called Axa(?) and Finax.

Oh my favorite comfort food, cereal. I love oatmeal with a titch of butter, a drop of milk and Lots of cinnamon. Store bought cereal Golden Grahams or Honey Nut Cheerios. I actually only eat cereal once a month. :(

The young emperor adores Oatmeal ( we call it porridge here ), sliced banana, cinnamon, brown sugar. Cooked the basic method, water , pinch of sea salt , cast iron pan .

Only cereal I have ever truly craved is Bircher Muesli. When I was living on-board I had it almost everyday. Healthier alternative to so many other menu items. I had never had it before, it became addictive. Especially so when there was a huge range of extras all laid out to customise it. Hard to explain what it's like, it's kind of raw , yet soft and I always ate it chilled. Preference for adding strawberries, blueberries and raw cashews if my memory serves me correctly. I have yet to make it at home, needs to be prepared the night before. Closest I get to cereal myself now is fresh Papaya with Greek style yoghurt and a topping of All Bran because it's crunchy.

I Googled a recipe.

Bircher Muesli

* 200g Rolled Oats
* Juices Of 2 Lemon
* 2 Sour Green Apples Such As Granny Smith Apples
* 500g Plain Yoghurt
* 150g Honey
* Poached Fruit Such As, Poached Pear (Or Fresh Fruit)
* 40g Roasted Hazelnuts (Skinned And Crushed To Serve)

Method

1. The night before, mix the oats, lemon juice and 125 ml
2. (4 fl oz/1/2 cup) water together in a bowl.
3. Cover and soak overnight.
4. In the morning, grate the apples, with their skin on, and add to the bowl of soaked oats.
5. Add the yoghurt and honey and mix together well.
6. Divide the muesli among four bowls, top with your fruit selection and sprinkle with the hazelnuts.

The brands in Scandinavia and Germany seem to be different. I am pretty sure though that it is basically the same stuff.

Normal Müsli here contains rolled oats, raisins, nuts and often corn flakes, sun flower seeds and several kinds of dried fruits.
There are dozens of types (e.g. berries, chocolate, tropical fruits, honey, there is even a cuppucino type).

We tried the fruit and the papaya kind, and one that's supposed to be diabetic friendly. Very cinnamon-y with very little dried fruit.

That sounds so good! Well except for the honey.
And the hazelnuts.
And I'm not sure about the yoghurt
:D But the rest sounds GREAT!

I love oatmeal with maple syrup mixed in! Yummy! I use sugar free syrup these days and it is still good.

My cereal faves are Raisin Bran and Mini Wheats and I oftentimes mix granola with my yogurt.

DD doesn't care for cereal much but she loves dry Cheerios as a snack.
