Have you noticed BDSM in the mainstream?

I was watching Mtv the other day and saw the new Jlo video, She actually appears to be in a fetish club in the video... And later I was watching that "shot at love" with Tila Tequila, and she had these heaven and hell dates, well the heaven date was forgetable, but the Hell date, was bondage inspired, She yelled at these boys humiliating them to their knees and whipping them...(sounded like heaven to me)
I am very into bondage and s&m and I am seeing little reffrences and inuendo everywhere all the sudden, from these leather cuffs everyone is wearing, (even Betsy Johnson has designed and released some) to all the goth kids wearing collars for costume....

Has this always been going on and I didn't notice before?

Have you noticed BDSM items and themes becoming cool, trendy or mainstream too?

Has been happening for a long time. I prefer more the unexpected and unstaged moments though as opposed to the staged scenes for music videos etc. LOL, like this evenings rehearsal clips of Alesha (UK Strictly Come Dancing). She wasn't getting a step so Matthew Pulled her over and gave her a spank on her butt. She spluttered in surprise and exclaimed he had spanked her, then remarked it was a stingy one as well...then thoughtfully admitted with a surprised smile that it might actually have felt good and perhaps if he did it again she would remember the step perfectly.

Harry Potter

Not to defile a kid's book, but really...chocolate after a dememtor's attack aka subspace? And Dumbledore was gay? Sounds like J.K. has some 'splainin' to do...to every close-minded, repressed bible banger, at least...and (don't tell anyone), but I like Justin Timberlake's new stuff. So listen to all his new songs...huge BDSM elements in all of them. In addition, when Brit (yes, I'm sorry) was dating him, she had a song called "I'm a Slave for You." It's been around for a while, but I find the more I learn and the more I pay attention to popular culture it's been there since I can remember.

As far as celebrities go...

Dave Navarro (guitarist, Jane's Addiction, The Panic Channel, solo work.) is very open about engaging in BDSM activities from the "bottom" side of the equation. If you look up his video for "Rexall" on YouTube, it will give you a good idea. He has also done several interviews and photo shoots that have involved blood, wax, and knives.

Well I caught the obvious ones...

Okay, I now realize Devo must have ment whip it, literally, and the Brittney Spears one was a clear one with the orgy in the video...

I realize that there has had to have been some bleeding of BDSM into popular culture, But I realized I noticed some and hoped for others to tell what they have noticed or felt about it.

But did ya have to blow my mind with the Harry Potter one... OMG, I am still laughing about the idea of a single mom, subistute teacher writting a book with little hints to very adult practices. I knew I loved that series...

And Dave Nevaro, that's very interesting he is into bottoming, makes me a lot more curious all the sudden *never found him super interesting*
I have no one else I can discuss this with, in my whole life... Anyone else have another example?

Thanks to all,

i dont know if its always been there or not, but the more in touch with my own sense of bdsm, the more i pick it out around me.

Of course Madonna included it in some of her videos as well, but that was early '90's from memory.

Back in the 80's the leather collars and bracelets were seen a lot...similar to the one Fi has on in her av.

Sometimes they were for the Goth, other times just costume pieces; but a few groups in college had the leashes with them also.

chokers

I didn't realize the correlation between chokers and collars and BDSM untill I started researching... and I find the whole idea completely facinating and have always preffered a choker to a necklace...

Madonna was one I correlated recently remembering her sex book, and the movie she did with her dancers Bedtime Stories or something... I think that's what it was called, she showed signs in her videos but she didn't come across as "reaching" either, very natural and dripping with sexy, never acting... I think she helped make it okay to be dirty... but that's another topic.

I have been looking at all kinds of things diffrently and seeing little correlations, definately more since I knew what to look for...

I also had a few expiriences where people hinted to their kink in conversation, in public or at work, where I couldn't openly ask or talk about it, One was my own customer who practically begged me to hurt her... I preffer the ones unstaged and real life reffrences that make the hairs on your neck stand up.

I am not a horror movie person, but I finally got around to watching Hellraiser. Now admittedly, I think this actually put some of this stuff into the popular dialogue. The dark forces in question are really just some slightly mis-shapen modern primitives.

For some reason I found the film profoundly UN scary and actually kind of beautiful and baroque, like looking at a Bosch painting of hell or something. But yeah, I think that totally put SM and modification into the popular realm considering it was what, 85?

"Good and evil. How uncomfortable those words must be to you."

"There is no good or evil, only flesh and what we do with it."

Sorry...

Umm... 85'... that was a year before I was even born... I guess I missed that one...

I make up for my youth with my ability to learn and behave myself *wink*

I'm fairly young, so maybe I haven't seen the full extent of it, but I've definitely noticed that it seems a lot more obvious in mainstream then it used to, a lot more frequent... And yes that J-Lo video is OOZING it IMO.

Madonna, yeah, but she was known for pushing the envelope, I'm not sure she could be considered mainstream... more like shockstream... lol (tho I've got to admit the Erotica video had me wet...)

ITs all over the place in music...

NIne Inch Nails has BDSM all over their music. "Head Like a Hole," "Closer," "Happiness in Slavery," and "Meet your Master" pop instantly into my head.

The Lords of Acid made a short lived career off of making music seemingly just for BDSM scenes.

Tool has several references in their music. "Stinkfist," "Pushit," and "Bottom"

And this is just off the top of my head at 2.45 am

I know it seemed to me that a few of the latest Evanessence songs are about it.. Losing Control and Good Enough are the two the pop into mind..

It's funny, a friend of mine is writing novellas and she asked me to review it.. and was afraid I'd find the sex scenes too offensive.. When I read them, I saw that she was hinting at BDSM with her characters. Malin and I have now been wrestling with the idea of .. how do I tell her that she's being to cliche... without telling her that we're into BDSM (I dont think she'd handle it well - well she would..up to the poly part - she and her husband cant comprehend us allowing each other to have other partners in online games)

Don't forget Angelina Jolie - before she married Brad Pitt. She had a girlfriend and was very open about her BDSM life.

I haven't noticed BDSM in the mainstream at all. In fact, I'm pretty sure BDSM doesn't exist. It's something I made up after a bad bout of flu.

Yes

I have always loved NIN, and knew Trent was a twisted bastard,

Empress I have the Evanesanece album,
"I can't say No to you" is one that screamed to me, as if she was warning she will obey, so take care of what is asked of her...

And I have the Flyleaf self titles debuit, and there are some songs on there which could apply to D/s... but them being from Texas, and having a hardcore sound, they are ringing true of a christian band... I think they are singing about god actually... but...

Tool is one that doesn't completely suprise me, those guys are math geniuses and bondage is pretty previalent in the nerd (the cool nerds like me) world... Sci Fi/gaming and BDSM all seen to overlap each other in the venn diagram of life... at least with most of the people I have talked to...

I hadn't realized all reffrences that are really out there...

Ran a LARP for a couple of years. On an average night we had around 20-25 people there. Of the crowd that showed the last couple of times that I ran it, seven are/were involved in the lifestyle. Anecdotal, yes, small sample group, yes, but still indicative. And I can mention other gaming groups that I've been involved in that had an unusually high proportion of BDSM'ers in them. Then again, I've often described BDSM as "Sex for Gamers" to my gaming friends that have asked me about it. Role-play, scene creation, showmanship, props, etc are near and dear to most gamers' hearts.

A lot of gaming material is rife with BDSM themes, some are positively entranced by it (just about anything by White Wolf, for example)

It's appeared many times in primetime TV in the US... Law & Order, CSI, and last night on Pushing Daisies, a guy got strapped to a board by a dominating woman and had a ball gag under the tape over his mouth - on ABC!

Nip/Tuck has always had sexual tones to it but the season premiere a couple of weeks ago had a female Dom and she would do needle play and biting with this "celebrity".

oh wow.

BDSM on ABC, that's what I call "prime time", but I also realize they do it for ratings and to make money... not to help foster acceptance... or maybe both, I tend to feel when it is a reach, it cheapens the expirience and can lend to further misunderstanding of the lifestyle in general (have seen a parallel in the GBLT world with mainstream use of lesbains and lesbian relationships in Tv)

I never thought of gaming like that (about props, scenes and roleplaying) but I have told you about the SciFi cons being full of people into BDSM... me included... White Wolf huh, I will have to check that out *curious*

I love nip tuck, and I must have missed the episode with the needles... Are you talking about the chick that got her nipple bitten off? I remember Kimber being into deviant sex... didn't she have a tie to it?

To me yelling is yucky. I thought Tila knew about as much about BDSM than she did about being "a bisexual." LOL.

She is a media whore who will do anything to keep the spotlight. I wouldn't fuck her or most of the contestwhores on that show with a ten foot pole and a million condoms.

However . . . I can't stop watching. LMAO!

Dani is my fav. Her I might fuck! Dayum!

Um, so back to the question. Yes, I have noticed BDSM in the mainstream more and more. As they try to be edgy and cool. Just as all the gay stuff flooded the media a while back.

Too bad that doesn't always equal greater acceptance.

right!

I know... I agree FurryFury, but I think it has to do with how the media uses alternative lifestyles to perk ears and turn eyes as a freakshow, both lifestyles...
Only probably makes it harder because they feed into the propganda... If these people where shown in regualr life and positive maybe it would do more to gaining acceptance with society. If reguar people could see the similarities between themselves and people who are diffrent...

*gets off the soapbox*

Don't get me started

Nice little film about a Professional Domme and her client getting a little messed up about boundaries

Going Under - it's on DVD now.
