Have you ever been drawn...

That can be a wonderful thing.

Some of my erotic drawings — well those could be cause for trauma for offspring to inherit. LOL

LMAO!

More than painting I would like to be drawn with pencil, like sketching.
I love those very much.

Once a characature(so). I have, however, commissioned portraits of my two nieces. Their mother cried when we gave them to she and her husband. Captured the girls as one was leaving college and the other as a sophomore. Expensive and some of the best money we ever spent.

Ah. cried in a good way! whew

I am guessing that the commissioned portraits were created from photos, yes?
It seems that sitting for paintings is rather rare. There are quite a few artists who can create accurate pencil/graphite or pastel portraits from life rather quickly. More often as caricatures (as that is more "forgiving" as a technique).

Interesting.
I reckon that most folk put more "value" on paintings over sketches.

Don't get me wrong, I do love paintings. But I find sketches so expressive.
It's like B&W pictures.

One of my favorite artists is Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione. An Italian Baroque painter, printmaker and draftsman, of the Genoese school.

And of course, my absolute favorite of them all is The Vitruvian Man by Leonardo. Pure perfection!

More than 30 years ago, I did my own self drawing. It was not my best work, but it was at the beginning of art class.

I had a friend who worked in comics that drew a bunch of his friends, including me. He passed away recently and I really regret not asking him for the sketch he did of me.

Hybrid the girls sat in the studio and the artist took multiple photos. She captured them. She did two of the younger. The second was different. She hides who she is but the artist saw more than she typically shows.

Ah.

I love seeing drawings...and, indeed, they can often have more vitality. Many artists tend to "stiffen up" when going to "finished work"and lose their "hand".

On the other hand (ha!) I'd say that it isn't the medium so much as the master.

That first image (as shown) is not, technically a drawing, rather an intaglio print, an etching, which may have been "drawn" with a stylus into a resist on a metal plate, then etched (with acid).... then inked and printed. or possibly a dry-point where the stylus actually was used to scribe marks into the plate directly - then inked and printed.

I'm not a big fan of Castiglione, myself. Not that it matters.:)

I love paintings but I find sketches to be more unique. Beautifully raw.

There can be a certain spontaneity to drawings, especially sketches (almost by definition). Not necessarily "more" unique.;) But I get your. meaning.

I do love seeing good draughtmanship, loose or tight (not "stiff" — some use so much control that the life gets squeezed out of the image)

It is true that it isn't the medium so much as the master. If you gave me Caravaggio, then all bets are off. I am all for painting. :D:heart:

Could you share it here?

yes, I've done a few "selfies" in Art School... not sure if I have any of those saved digitally. They are likely buried deep in the fat files! LOL

That is a bummer!

Fun that it happened, but a drag that it wa snot preserved (or at least not available to you)

Ah ha. Yes, when sittings are not possible, I prefer to take my own photos, and multiples, as a single photo (especially of a stranger) makes it difficult to capture the nuances. Also, I feel that simply reproducing a (single) photo is nearly pointless, because... well, photos. One should bring something more to the image — that life, the "rawness" (as Tixxii mentioned earlier) something.

It sounds like that is what you got.

You likes what you like.

I'd love to get back into painting... some day. For now, getting back into drawing would be good. Time and privacy. Too much other rubbish needs to be knocked down.< working on that.

That was before flash drives. I have it somewhere in some obscure sketchbook. I'm not home right now though. I'm quarantined.

I like many artists of various genre and period. The list is long.
I also love those old affiche. I don't know how you call them in English. I know it's not painting but I really love them. I have 6 of them at home. I would love to have some from the Soviet Union during the 20's too. Keeping an eye on eBay.

Heh heh.

I totally get that (both parts). Perhaps when you're out of quarantine, and you think of it... :)

I have soooo much work that I'd like to scan. dozens and dozens of sketch books. And all the large format life drawings! — some I had taken slides of (I can scan the slides). Back before the turn of the century (most recent turn) I had a set up just for photograph art, though it was with a film camera, and a 4' x8' piece of homosote (as a pin board) covered with black velvet. I don't have a good macro lens for my digital camera (to get a square shot, not fish-eyed).

Ah, like propaganda posters? Lithographs perhaps.
comme ça?
