What Is Hate Speech?

The issue seems to fall into two camps. One camp asserts that hate speech is any speech or demonstrative conduct that stagmatizes whatever an individual is sensitive to and uncomfortable about. Consequently, hate speech, in this context can be anything. Say, teasing someone about their jug ears or big butt. Ranking people according to performance is hate speech, because someone may be sensitive to how well they did on the test or competition. If the words or conduct cause you to feel sad, it's hate speech. Many colleges and corporations adopt this standard.

The other camp insists on evidence of tangible injury. They want to see blood and gore that's directly linked to speech and conduct. Subjective feelings dont cut it. Maybe your ears are huge. Maybe your performance was the worst in the history of Earth. But how does calling things what they are harm you? Where's the blood? Maybe Miley Cyrus really does put on a better show than your kid.

Yes, thank you for this, JBJ. It has been hurtful what I've had to endure from those people who lack sensitivity on this site, especially those who don't possess a sense of humor, not to mention those how band together in an act of mean spiritedness.

I'm sensitive to peasants with pitchforks because I've been at the working end of their tools a time or two. Lemme cite 2 instances.

At work a Minority-American was making coffee in the kitchen and spilled a can of coffee all over the floor. I made no comments other than to say, "Uh oh!" Well, I ended up before a committee of Inquisators for my saucy remark. Nothing came of it because the complaint was nonsense. But I was forced to make a defense.

The 2nd example involved a phone page. My supervisor paged me and I used a pay phone outside a bar to return the call. I wasnt patronizing the bar, I stopped there to use the phone outside the building. Well, a peasant saw me and made a complaint that I was at a bar. And as soon as I returned to the office I had to do the alcohol test, etc. But they wouldnt allow me to confront my accuser. Because a confrontation might upset the person and be considered hostile.

as you can see it's rather narrowly crafted. it has intrinsic problems, but it hardly establishes a tyrrany.
