One of my idiot employees put a Hard Drive password on a company Gateway 600Series laptop. Of course he promptly forgot it within 3 days.

Is there any hope or am i stuck buying a new Drive?

I'm sure that when the resident computer experts see your post you'll get additional responses. In the meantime, have you tried removing the battery for an hour or so? I used to use a power-on password on my desktop computer and once was able to recover from a forgotten password by removing the battery for a period of time.

I doubt that you're stuck with buying a new drive, but you may be stuck reformating the drive and abandoning ll of the information it contains.

Of course that depends on how the drive is password protected and if it's a password protecting the drive or one protecting the system boot sequence.

If your laptop will boot into MSDOS, and can access the drive that way, you should be ble to format the drive without needing the password.

Wait a bit before you do anything drastic. there a lot of password cracking programs out there.

What operating system is it?

Sometimes if you call the company they have a default password that they can give you provided you or you company can prove your the owner.

I know that Dell has this as our corporation is all Dell and I have had to call before.

Wouldn't hurt to call Gateway just to see if they provide the same service. Will save on either reformatting or searching for a password crack software.

By the way if this is the cmos password reformatting may not be a choice you have.

It will no doubt ask you for the password before you get that far.

Thanks

Using the info you guys posted I was able to remove the Bios/Cmos password. The Hard Drive Password is evidently encrypted on the drive itself. I contacted the Drive Manufacturer(Toshiba) and they said they'd be happy to remove the PW for 3/4 the price of a new drive. I think i'm just going to get a new one.

Thanks again all and check out this new issue
