Halloween Contest Support Thread

You can't yet. If the beginning of the titles are similar enough, then the series feature does a fair job of catching them.

For example, it lists "Prelude" and "Epilogue" within the series for Danica in the correct sequence, along with those labeled "pt. xx"

My Magic Of the Wood series still gets listed as individual stories, though, because it's the last half of the title that links them, rather than the beginning.

"Lynn and Lee" and my VR : DQ series get a series listing, because that's the beginning of every title.

Actual ability to organize a series yourself is supposed to be in the cards, but it hasn't been implemented yet.

I like the idea of putting stories in a series together in the indexes, but the only practical way to do this is to have the authors include the info in the notes section when they submit them. They are supposedly also listed as series in the same category, but that's an idea that should be scrapped. Not all stories in a series are in the same category. I have one series, Marian and Ryan, which covers at leas four different categories, and will cover more. The earlier stories are not even listed, because of the dissimilarity in their names. I have another series, The Pet Teacher, that isn't listed as a series because the names are all different and it also covers at least three categories.

I also don't like the idea of the Management changing the names of stories that are submitted, but there doesn't seem to be a lot that can be done. There is one thing, but I don't like the idea of doing it.

Things that go bump in the night.

Since Ogg ain't here to do it.

ick. halloween is not my favorite time of the year.

Ms.read - I empathies. Halloween, far from my favorite yearly event.
HOWEVER; I’m determined to write a story for the event.

That said, I’m a comparative new-be. I did enter in the Nude Day and Summer Lovin contests.
I guess about the best I can say is that I entered.

Because I am such a rookie, I’m hoping that someone can answer a few freshman questions.
“What’s a troll?” and “Are there normally over a hundred entries in each contest?”

Troll, as usually referenced in the thread, refers to someone who drops a vote of 1 on the story. They may not even have read it. They may bomb the whole list just to be irritating. They may be jealous competition, or said competition's fans trying to make their favorite come out on top.

For whatever reason, they vote 1 or something else low on your story that's rather outside the response from other voters/commenters.

The other time that "troll" comes up is in reference to people who leave nasty comments ( often barely comprehensible ) on your story, which have little to nothing to do with the story and absolutely nothing of constructive value.

"shes a skank and u must be askank to if u write crap lik this. u both die of AIDS hahaha!"

That's a troll -- and a mild example compared to some of the reality in categories like Loving Wives

The number of stories in a contest varies. This is a brand new one, so it picked up a lot of entries. All those summer stories that people have posted normally got saved up and put in the contest this time.

Halloween is also popular, and will probably have a lot. Ditto for Winter Holiday, and then Valentines. Earth Day and Nude Day are a little harder to write for the theme, so they may not have quite as many.

No matter what, there's always a lot of competition.

Are you writing a Halloween SKANK story, Dark?

Ha! No. Actually, if it comes together, I'm going to steal a couple of guys that I work with, who're amateur paranormal investigators on the side. They both have vivid personalities that should jump off the page.

Hey, they'll be happy. They're getting laid.

But it is a Halloween story... Will they survive to brag about it?

candy corn

that's a great picture tx, i was waiting for someone to find something like that (of course, by waiting, i really just mean in the 10-15ish minutes it took me to read through these posts, but Still... good work!)

Thanks for the info.

Darkniciad; Thanks for the info. I feel like I’m beginning to understand some of the nuances of this site.

From what you’ve said, I can count myself lucky that no trolls have hit my comment sections. Then again, I have not ventured into some of the more controversial subject areas.
Now, if I could only get a handle on my grammar and cut back on some of my useless story rambling.

While I’m here, I’d like to give a quick note of thanks to you Darkniciad for your time in answering my questions. In addition, there are several other writers that have offered me sound advice and words of encouragement. Boxlicker101, TE999 and Austin8 for your words of encouragement that kept me writing thru the Nude Day contest. In this present contest, I owe a debt of thanks to Tx Tall Tales and PrincessErin for their frank and helpful comments. P.S Your kind votes didn’t hurt either.

“What’s a troll?” and “Are there normally over a hundred entries in each contest?”

When I was new here, I wrote a troll satire, which can be found via the link in my sig line. To add authenticity to the story, I didn't delete any of the derogatory comments the anonymous trolls added. Some of them are pretty funny.

The other definition for troll is in the context of a forum like this one, where the troll shows up in a thread and posts shit to annoy, rather than contribute. I've done that myself, more out of indignation than a desire to be an asshole, but the outcome is still the same.

Troll humor. Huh.

I have some time now so I'm on my way to read it.
Thanks for more insight on the subject.

Still chuckling!

Just gave you a 5 on your story, "You’ve Been Trolled!"
However; I noticed even that story was not exempt from a generous Troll.

Yeah, I wrote one of those too.

It was fun to do, and a lot of AH members added chapters as PC. :D

I had an idea last year that fizzled on me, inspired by the Alice Cooper song "Wind-Up Toy" I thought I had it all down -- so far as to put together a cover image for it to put up on my website. Then, a short distance in, I stumbled across a huge plot hole that I couldn't find any way to deal with. I tossed the cover and partial story into the fizzle folder, and forgot about it.

Inspiration hit me today at work. Here's part of the hastily scrawled notes in my nigh-but indecipherable chicken scratching *laugh*

Two pages of more or less new stuff running on the same general plotline as the original idea, and paving over that plot hole.

I think that it might just see the light of day -- or rather the dark of night -- this year. :D

I was just at the summer love-in contest thread.
Personally, just as you pointed out Princess, I thought my story was to long.

Now there seems to be some contention among a few of the seasoned writers that long is good.

As the new-be on the block. Does anyone have any input or thoughts on the matter?

Too short isn't good either. Long is okay, if you interest the readers and keep them turning the pages, figuratively speaking. If the first thousand or so words are dull, with no promise of sex yet to come and no interesting conversations, people will stop reading and they might even give you a low score, especially if you are not a familiar author.

Okay. The first 500 words are down on... screen(?) And I have no idea with the fuck I'm writing.

*Laugh* I'm left-handed. That's a handicap in and of itself to handwriting.

Add to that a steady stream of teachers trying to force me to write right-handed, and I lost several crucial years of penmanship. By the time my mother found out about it and blew up, it was pretty much already too late.

Throw hasty, stream-of-consciousness and my own garbled version of shorthand in there with poor -- often vertical -- writing surfaces, and that slop is what you end up with.

Nobody else needs to actually be able to read it, anyway :D

It could be worse.

I could have written it in the pictoral code that I developed about 15 years ago :D

The young one has already demonstrated that he's going to follow me, and I let the teachers know every year that I will not be amused if they try to force a pencil into his right hand.

I am yet to post a story on lit, but I think I shall try to enter this contest once I get the story that I'm currently working on up.

Giant Rooster dressed in an Elvis Costume hiding in the bushes outside the door of a mansion waiting for party goers dressed as Hookers. My story is coming together nicely :)
