Now that a clean bill has been kicked back to the house, some hard core tea party conservatives are urging the speaker to toe the line and amend the bill yet again and send it back to the Senate. Prominent tea party members have been quoted as saying that if the speaker does not hold his ground his speaker ship is "effectively over." The speaker is in a tough spot. He clearly knows that his course of action is both illogical and unproductive. However, if he wants to keep his job he just may have to bow down to the extreme right wing of his party. So basically it comes down to whether or not the speaker considers his job more important than the US economy.

I agree, shutdown would not be catastrophic. However the debt ceiling would be another issue all together. With regard to the speaker, I don't know if in fact he's already been made impotent to some degree.

I've been reading a government shut down would stop or slow down people from getting a gun permit. Wouldn't that hurt those who own gun stores?
