President Bush has signed an executive order permitting military trials for any terrorists captured by or turned over to U.S. troops in the war on terrorism. This would include Osama Bin Laden. Good move, in spite of what the ACLU says.
The preferred way to Bin Laden to get his just reward would be for his own followers to turn on him and kill him. It’s rather hard to claim martyrdom when your own followers murder you. If his followers don’t take him out, then let’s hope our Special Forces guys take care of business.
But --- if we do screw up and capture him alive, a trial would be a debacle. Witnesses would be intimidated --- afraid for their very lives. Ditto for jurors.
The ACLU and so-called “civil libertarians” are calling for Bin Laden or any captured terrorist to be tried in our current civil trial system.
We’re at war. It’s not a civil action, it’s a military action. You don’t apply the rules of our criminal justice system to war. You don’t even apply the rules of our civil justice system to our own military, why should they apply to the enemy?
This order signed by Bush should send chills through the hearts of terrorists and wannabes. They now know that they can’t murder thousands of Americans and then seek refuge behind the constitutional and civil protections we offer our own citizens.
The ultimate military tribunal is the bullet. If the bullets miss then let a military court finish the job.
