Ghis (closed)

"I wish Sam and Rho still were in a way." Kate said, hugging Ashelin a little tighter against her side. "But I know these two will fill that role nicely. They just need a gran to help them get out of trouble with Ma and Da."

"With these sweet little faces, they hardly need the help." Kitty looked over as Heather still slumbered peacefully. "They've already got your father wrapped around their little fingers."

"He's too soft for his own good." Kate chuckled as she thought about her father. "Which makes him the best Da that any of us could have ever asked for."

"He turned out to be so much more than anyone could've expected or asked of him. All of my children did, despite their beginnings." Kitty's smile grew a bit melancholy. "If Tamblin had been in his right mind... He would've been so proud to see Brogan go from that tiny, frail thing to a beloved king. He saw the start of it..."

"I'm sure he's proud." Kate said softly about the grandfather that she had never known. "Papa is certainly proud. You can see it in the way he looks at everyone."

"Vincenzo loved this family from the moment I told him about them all, and he was hooked forever when he helped me bring Ashien and Kayla into the world. Sweet old man... I don't know what we'd do without him."

"Papa?" Ashelin asked, looking up at her sister the moment she heard Vincenzo's name.

"He's getting Gran some tea. He'll be back soon and then I'm sure he'll play all day with you." Kate explained to the toddler, hugging her close again when she seemed to accept that answer for the moment.

"You know, I think if anyone ever would've melted Tamblin's heart, it would've been these little lasses." Kitty smiled as Ashelin settled. "He would never admit it, but he had a soft spot for girls. Kayla nearly got through to him when she was small. He didn't even get angry that she called Vincenzo her Papa all her life." Kitty shook her head then. "I'm sorry, love. Sometimes I can't help thinking about him. He could've been so much more than he was..."

"He was part of your life for a long time, Gran. You don't have to apologize about loving him. It might make some people upset or they might not understand, but I do. I think sometimes about my real Da, even though I never knew him. His brothers say he had moments of kindness before he went mad. I like to think that he passed along that piece of himself to me and not the other side."

"Arland was a good- if strict- fellow for a while... But you take after your mother most. And you got plenty of influence from your Da, so much that no one can deny you're a Ghis." Kitty smiled at her granddaughter. "You always were. From the moment we knew you were on the way."

"I always felt bad for Ma. I know it was hard to have to see me every single day." Kate said, knowing her mother had battled a deep depression when she was born. "I reminded her of something horrible but she did her best to show me love through it all."

"It wasn't you she was seeing, love. It was Arland, and the memories of Wick. But she learned to separate you from that. And seeing your father never treated you differently from Ciaran or Annie, she was able to do the same. I think the first step she took to recovering was your doing, actually," Kitty smiled, though painfully. "I know they've told you that we nearly lost you before you even had a chance to live. But you came back, in your father's arms. That's one of the reasons he's so attached to you, and why your mother could believe you would never be treated as anything less than his daughter."

"I don't think I saw her truly smile about something else until I saw her with Sam and Rho for the first time." Kate murmured softly. "She was happy, but her smile didn't come back until then."

"She was hurt, sweetheart. It wasn't you. If anything, you saved both of them. Your father still wasn't quite himself until you came along, and your mother was struggling to keep them both going. You relieved a lot of heartache, much more than you'll ever know."

"Then I want my wedding to have something special for the both of them. Da didn't have to raise me as his own and Ma didn't have to give birth to me." Kate said simply, so much wiser beyond her years than other girls her age. "I want them to have a special part in everything."

"What did you have in mind, love?" Kitty asked with a warm smile. "I'm sure I can talk them into just about anything."

"I don't know, exactly. I know I want to get married in the little glen in the woods. It's one of Kell and I's favorite spots." Kate said, dreaming of her little wedding to her wolf. "And I want all my siblings involved. Even Heather and Ashelin which might be a tal order."

"We can manage. All I need to do is put the girls with your father and grandfather when they get fussy."

"I think they're the ones that are wrapped around someone's finger. Heather has a sweet spot for Justin." Kate said as the door opened and Vincenzo stepped back inside the room. "And Ashelin loves Papa."

"Heather does love her puppy," Kitty chuckled, looking up as Vincenzo entered. "And I think it's safe to say everyone is fairly charmed by our resident Italian doctor."

"No one can resist tall, dark, and handsome," Vincenzo chuckled, coming to scoop up Ashelin after kissing Kitty's cheek and Kate's.

Ashelin instantly clung to her grandfather as he scooped her up, her head heavy against his shoulder as she continued to wake up. "Papa." She whispered against his ear, patting his cheek with her hand gently.

"Papa. He finally proposed." Kate said with a wide grin, showing him her new ring.

"Well, it's about time," Vincenzo chuckled, cradling Ashelin close. "Though I think you two made up your minds some time ago. It's hardly a surprise, amore," he leaned down to kiss Kate's cheek. "Surprise or no, I'm glad. You two make a lovely match."

"She's been making plans since you fell for that boy," Vincenzo shook his head and Kitty scoffed.

"I have not. Though I've thought about it."

"I wouldn't have thought she would do anything less for me." Kate said as she leaned over and kissed her grandmother's cheek.
