gender atypical

I do many things that make people (mostly those that are my friends and co-workers) say

are you a fucking girl?

know what? I don't care I still do them.

what are some things you do that are atypical for your gender? have you ever felt, or been made to feel, embarassed for going outside of those norms?

I work on cars. Especially classic cars. I do my own engine work and detailing. Women turn up their noses, typically. But boy, do the men like it. ;)

Hmmm...I love guitars, and it seems that is a little atypical.

And I am addicted to football. I get absolutely fucking RABID over the Dawgs and the Titans. :)

Here's one we are missing that should be obvious to us- the women here all post to a porn site. I think that is still a bit unusual because many women will deny having any interest in porn at all.

Oh, I do lots of gender atypical things.

I collect action figures. I was in the Boy Scouts and taught archery. I wear a lot of men's clothes, although not so you can really tell. I have a anime and scifi-oriented geekiness that I rarely find displayed in the female world.

In fact, I took a test in a a psychology class once that classified me as a masculine personality type.

I hate to shop for clothes. If I need something, I'll find it in a catalog, go to the store, ask someone where the item is, try it on and buy it. I don't comparison shop if it's something I want and need and it's there. Same for shoes.

My best friends know this and they stopped asking me to go shopping with them years ago. I felt slightly embaarrassed, but I got over it quickly.

I also like to go to the range and target shoot. I've yet to see another woman in the range...and all the guys seem to want to see if the chick can shoot. That gets embarrassing sometimes, but I'm a good shot, so I'll deal with it.

I can work on my own car! :) --comes from being a "farm kid"

I grew up as "one of the guys"...all my good friends are guys

I live in jeans, t-shirts, and tennies/boots

-- VincentFloyd -- my hubby got the same stuff you did... he had long hair up til about 1 1/2 years ago

my hair's much shorter than it was before, but it's still a little above my shoulders, i don't have the heart to cut it, besides, I think most chicks dig it

because of my long hair, i like to braid it to keep my hands busy

I get some really weird looks for that too

okay, so lots of people do stuff that's gender atypical, but do people make fun of you over it? do you ever feel embarassed or freakish? do you ever make fun of someone else because they wander outside those gender norms?

people used to give me weird looks about my hair, or actually say sarcastic things, but it didn't take them too long to tone down and finally shut up for good. I never felt embarassed it's who i am, I liked the hair so I didn't care too much what others thought. I tease people who go outside the gender norms but unless it's something along the lines of "pee standing up and playing with my balls enough though I'm a woman" I don't really care

people tell me "I'm such a boy/man, a lot" Does it embarass me? No. Sometimes it makes me feel freakish.

But then, I look at them, and listen, really listen and just have to laugh.
