Gay Novels

Do you mean an iconic novel, one that is well-known and embodies gay culture, or something like that? I guess Rubyfruit Jungle is pretty iconic for lesbians. Stone Butch Blues is iconic for FTM trans guys. For gay men, maybe Giovanni's Room?

early morning random thoughts on little caffeine

james baldwin's just above my head was much more the novel that offered me a sense of normalcy about gay relationships because i read it before giovanni's room . i think that while universal themes are addressed in every generation, it is the individual's response/acknowledgement that allows the work to go deeper and affect them more.

was the boys in the band a book? i remember the contreversy etc. over the movie....47 here so remember that late sixties and early seventies as a time of taboos being talked about....the book conundrum about the mtf transformation of christine jergensen (?) receiving much discussion...i know if you do the math i was young but i knew early on that i was different from the expectations of the world....was always looking for the other different folk...

If you're looking for books which present a sense of normalcy about gay relationships (a major relief during the period of "gosh, I can't handle this, I'm so Different from everyone") I find the best ones are those which have some gay characters, but the plot is mostly about something else. Elizabeth A. Lynn and Diane Duane are excellent fantasy/sci-fi authors from this point of view (Particularly the Arun trilogy and Door into Fire respectively). Tanya Huff (The Fire's Stone) is also good. As for iconic gay literature, I've yet to read anything that I really felt that way about.

Nothing comes to mind immediately - I've torn through the 50's pulps a dozen times each, and have a few written by local lesbian writers. Currently, I am reading "The Big Book of Lesbian Horse Stories" - I would not recommend it as literature.

I suppose I read much the same drivel that "real people" read.

GB Troll? Ha - not even close.

Clive Barkers Sacrament has a gay lead character, who attempts to lead a normal relationship during the course of the novel. It's a great book, more dark fantasy than horror.

I got to read Stone Butch Blues for my Queer Genders and Sexualities class, and it was amazing.

I guess if someone wants old school, I'd go with The Well of Loneliness, but I'm not too sure about people's feelings on that book.

I don't know many contemporary books, as the class has focused more on the 1920s-1980s.

Forgot all about this thread, must have been a Friday.
The only one that springs to mind from my admittedly straight memory is Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit.

Call Me By Your Name, by Andre Aciman. So tender it will break your heart.
