are they up where you are???

from what I was told... its going to be $6.00 a gallon by midnight

although the cost of oil went from $6-$32/barrel.. gas prices haven't raised here (in Washington State) but you never know.. they may raise them in the next few days.. haven't heard any rumors about it yet..

Outside Atlanta

They were $1.32 when I went out earlier, which is what they have been all week.

Georgia has laws about raising price to gouge consumers in times of crisis and the fines, huttin down the business and bad press would cost way more than they would make by raising the price to $6 and hoping not to be cught.

Our gas prices hadn't gone up at 9:40 when I passed Mobil on the way home from work.

Time to ride bikes or walk, or take the bus. I think we should do what we can to help out the US by easing its demand for oil.

I was hoping it was a rumor...

but apparently in some parts of Michigan and a few other states... its already happening

My husband went to get gas at the corner Marathon and the were out....completly...just ran out.

He would rather ride his bike anyway.

When I went past a gas station here, it was the same it has been all week ($1.39). But the people were lined down the street.

It was reported on my local news that a gas station in Columbus, OH was selling gas for $4.99 a gallon.

5 dollars here in michigan.

All the gas stations were full, lines going out to the streets.

I've never seen anything like that before.

Is this really something to complain about right now?

Consider it grief tax...

My opinion is yes. The gas stations are taking advantage of people that are upset and panicked.

I'm in sw michigan. I went to work at 12:30pm and gas was at $1.55 or at least thats the lowest I saw. By 4:30pm gas was up to $1.85 (sldo the lowest i could find). I hear talk about it being up to $4 or $5 by morning.
Some station are running out here as well.

But if that wasn't enought police had to be brought in to one area because of a fight at gas stations in one area. People are beating the crap out of each other just or a gallon or two. what are we coming to?

proces still stable here in toronto.

Opec said they will raise production amounts so that the price wont skyrocket at the pumps.

what are we coming to? [/B][/QUOTE]

Economic collapse, if we arent carefull.

And I live in the middle of Michigan, and we had a couple fights break out as well. Gas stations had lines going out into the street.

Unreal.

Freaky, I can see where you got this from, but it is a bit off from what is up, and I'd just like to clarify this, so people don't think that gas prices are going to skyrocket beyond the sky.

I'd like to take a minute to clarify something about the oil we comsume here in the US. Since we don't use most of our domestic reserves... our oil is imported from the middle east at 36-45 dollars a barrel.

What we are looking at is the price of a barrel is going to be raised by 6$ possibly. Going from 6 to 36 would have our nation in shambles.... oh and before now....... gas would have been around 15-30 cents a gallon.

We seriously need to get out from under this substances domination of our planet's means of transport.

Magnetic propultion coupled by a water splitting (lots of energy between the H and O bonds) generator would do the trick. The trick is getting the shit to work on a small enough scale to make it viable to be internally operated.

If they implemented this shit (the technology exists, by the way) on a large scale they could generate enough electricity to run the planet with out using Nuclear power, and coal anymore, by using sea water. It is environmentally sound, because the elements are still able to form water again in the atmosphere.

I wish people would really wake up to the coming energy crisis that will hit hard, like this, and worse, if we don't prepare now.

I couldn't find anything about the price of oil going up, only that the three main exporters to the US, Kuwait, Saudi, and Iraq have kept up production as usual. The only financial blip that I could find was that the asian oil shares went up, that was for stock, not for crude.

Here in podunk nowhere, the prices jump over 3.50 a gallon for a few hours and people were stupid enough to pay it. About ten this evening, gas prices returned to normal, though many stations had run out of gas. Our price barometer is the AAFES gas station on post, they are required to sell at a specific price above wholesale. It never moved, despite backups at the pump and a delivery.

There is talk about investigations, law suits, and criminal indictments regarding price fixing, etc.

Isn't price fixing is illegal, and worthy of invesitgation?

It can undermine a nation if allowed to rise in occurance and in intensity, in a time like this.

The spuratic nature of these boosts are indicitive of just that occuring.

How can they live with themsleves?

Well, well, well. The vultures circle.

Call Consumer Affairs and report them. Take pictures of the prices and lines. Yes, you. It is your duty too. Otherwise they get away with it.

That is good advice, Merelan, and so right.

Today I will take my camera around the city and make sure no one is doing this here.

Our Mayor even threatend anyone who might try it, so I doubt that anything will come if it here. People are on watch for this crap.

I am off to keep an eye on the News, and the economy. I'll be back on later with what I find too.

Thank you for the link KM.

Rumors and innuendo. That's all. There is no threat to the oil supply. Yes, the price of crude went up, but only $6. Not from $6 to $32 or whatever. I fully expect that to go back down to normal levels soon. Most stock markets are either closed or operating under limited hours. Speculation is running rampant.

The best thing that we can all do is to NOT repeat the rumors and wild stories. If it sounds wild, check it out before you tell anybody else. More than likely it's not true. Why add to the panic?

Where I am, we closed gas stations. I am located in Central Michigan. Down in Grand Rapids, in some area's it was as much as $3 a gallon. In the detroit area, one gas station raised all it's prices (Regular, premium, etc) to $5 a gallon. They were among some of the stations that decided to remain open.

I have to go into town in a few minutes to take my daughter to school, and I will check the prices, and see if stations have been re-opened yet.

Can someone explain to me why people are panic buying in the first palce? Since i'm not in america I have no idea what's going on....

To my understanding, yesterday at some time in the early after noon, just about evry major newscaster reported that many gas stations would be closing, because we would not be getting any gas in for a few days.

Now, that overall won't hurt anyone, not for a few days at the very least, because we do have plenty stored. But with no flights coming in, and none going out, there isn't any way to get any crude in fast. It will be a slower process until we feel safe. On top of that WTC did almost 100% of all the trading for the US's supply of Crude, and with them closed down, for a few days at least, we won't be trading for it, either.

Overall, this results in us having more demand, then supply. BUT, it should not effect us for a few days at the very least.

Ways to help it include car pooling if possible. Taking alternate means of transportations, IE: subway, buses, commuter trains, bikes, and others. Also, many gas stations are fighting it by closing, even for only half a day. Some for more. The reduces the amount used in that day, which will help to keep prices lower. Last night on the news, when they were reporting on the raise in prices, they suggested that if you see a station with a very high price, don't buy it unless you absolutly need to.

If you have half a tank, and don't need to drive much, wait. Don't go out and buy it. If we wait it out, it should ease up, and soon. Likely by friday, is my guess.

Good luck everyone

Thanks for the explanation Gilly.

And thus begins the aftermath of this terrible event. It's gonna last a long time.
