As someone who comes from a country where houses aren't built from matchsticks and paper mache, what kind of wild Yankee invention am I looking at here?
He cut into the floor joists, which is not a good idea.As someone who comes from a country where houses aren't built from matchsticks and paper mache, what kind of wild Yankee invention am I looking at here?

It took me a second to realize why this is funny, but then I saw what he did. Oh boy.He cut into the floor joists, which is not a good idea.
Honey? Why is the floor here so bouncy? Have you noticed how Gramma's wheelchair always rolls to the middle? It took me a second to realize why this is funny, but then I saw what he did. Oh boy.

The quote about using the "extra boards" was the Chef's KissOh, it was a special brand of stupidity at work here. Notching joists for mechanicals is normal and there are guidelines for doing so, but cutting the entire lumber width? Holy moly.
See the cat sliding across the floor...Honey? Why is the floor here so bouncy? Have you noticed how Gramma's wheelchair always rolls to the middle?
But the post originally mentions the ground, and judging by the uneven surface below and what looks like a small bunch of dried-up blades of grass, I assume it is indeed the ground underneath. He cut into the floor joists, which is not a good idea.
Shot in the dark but maybe this is some structure on a trailer park type lot? No basement or slab foundation? But the post originally mentions the ground, and judging by the uneven surface below and what looks like a small bunch of dried-up blades of grass, I assume it is indeed the ground underneath.
Which only makes me more confused. Why is there any accessible ground under the house's bottom floor? Where are the foundations? Did someone forget to pour the concrete?
It's probably a trailer, or prefabricated house. A lot of those, especially older ones don't bother with foundation. But the post originally mentions the ground, and judging by the uneven surface below and what looks like a small bunch of dried-up blades of grass, I assume it is indeed the ground underneath.
