(( This letter to the editor was in a large cities paper recently ref the little girl who dies as a result of being struck by a puck during a hockey game. It's just FYI, let your heart decide what you do about its content ))

To Whom this may Concern,
I live in the small community of West Alexandria, Ohio and we have had an incredibly hard week after one of our children was killed in the tragic hockey puck accident. Our community is a small local community of about 1500 people and everyone in this community have been affected directly or indirectly because of this
death.
The news media have moved into our town like vultures and as you are aware People Magazine reporters have been amongst the media that has found our little town.
I was appalled to find out that while the parents are in this deep grieving and were dealing with this child's viewing one of your reporters stood in line for well over an hour to get up to the Mother and hand her his card and said call me when you are ready. He was promptly escorted out of the Funeral Home. We may be a small community but I can tell you the word will spread widely and we will make sure that People Magazine will lose sales over this stunt. What part of the parents statement for respect of privacy until they were ready to issue a statement does your magazine not understand. We are not movie stars that
have put their lives in the media we are common everyday folks who see your reporter and the others as an intrusion to our privacy. For one minute think about if you were standing at the viewing for your own child and you have asked the media to please respect your privacy and then a callous reporter who wants nothing more than to try to dig up what can't be dug up hands you a card and says call me! I hope you never have to be in this situation but I can tell you that even the classmates which my son is one of Brittanie's are disgusted at the mass media that has invaded our town. If you want a story why don't you go to the NHL and see what can be done to better protect our children at these sporting events. Once again we may be small but we will be mighty in this situation and make sure that everyone we know passes the word of your magazines tactless efforts Brittanie was a beautiful little girl and our community loved her and all the parents have asked is for their privacy and we respect one another in this small town which is obviously more than your magazine can do.

It's classier than crashing into her limo in a tunnel I guess.

Edited: I still haven't wrapped my brain around this little girl dying. I can't imagine being in anyone's situation in that letter, but certainly the respect goes to the parents first and foremost. Still, I think we both know that the media has been way worse.

Sure it has and in the big picture this is such a small issue and has already been forgotten except for those within her community.

I wonder though, have we as a world become so engrosed in blood and guts that we welcome this or are we sheep being taken to the slaughter house?

Like I said though, it's there just for imformation, I'm not looking for a debate, but debates do seem to happen now and then.

I don't think it's a small issue. I think everyone's life has value (I don't dispute that you feel the same)....it bothers me when it's quantified by a status, though.

Not to entirely change the focus...but I remember hearing on NPR, (paraphrased massively) "....and today, even a Catholic Priest was gunned down..."

Everyone's life has value. Everyone's. I don't think that it's any more or less sick to kill an innocent priest than it is an innocent civillian.

I'm tired so if I'm seeming confused that's not my intention, but I posted that article clip just to inform as many as possible using this media what the report and those he/she worked for did and yes I'm aware that they do this all the time if there's any hope of it's selling more print. What my agenda was or is if there is one, is that we not only as a Nation but as the world should take some action to stop this type of thing.
I think were on the same page here alexandraaah but we're takinng 2 roads to reach the same location.

Have a good night, this guys headed to sleep :rose:

Mine is very bumpy and there are many potholes.

Sleep. Yes.

Many Moons ago my brother was killed in a 'weird' accident. Weird enought to gain media attention (that is all I have to say about the accident).

It was my job to call friends and family, and man the phones and front door. My parents were a wreck.

I got a lot of phone calls. 99.9% of the press was very nice. The whole we are sorry bit, but we would like... I talked with a few of them. They were polite. I quess it might be because hanging up a phone doesn't take a lot of effort.

It was the assholes with the cameras that acted like total fucking assholes. The local TV media. They acted like we some how owed them something. Parking all over the damn place, walking through flowers... Thankfully I knew a few deputies. One call ended all the bullshit. My buddy came and ran the fuckers off. And kept them off. So they did the standing down the street with my parents house in the background stories. Three networks at the time. Three stories, all the same. Wasted time. Hell one could have done it and shared.

The newspapers sent a few photogs to the funeral. They were descreet, so I left them alone. No Tv media showed up. Thank god.

I know they have a job to do. They were just trying to do there job in Ohio. But some of them don't seem to understand what their job is. They feel like the public owes them. Plus they want that exclusive comment.

I bet a lot of the people in West Alexandria read the articles, and watched the reports... :(

i feel for the parents of the little girl and all i can say is if that was my child and the f**king media tried to come in and take pictures and mess with people , they would be planning that bastards funeral next , i think i could hold my composure to a point then i would just snap

I live in within 30 miles of the city where the young girl died. It was Front Page news in all the local papers for several days.People magazine is nothing but a glossy version of the Enquirer or Star. Its not about compassion or caring its about selling magazines off of others tragedy. In 1994 I was involved in an event that brought media attention, Interviewed on camera etc. What I learned in that short time was that it was all about ratings and exploitation. It wasnt about the truth of the situation. The first version was the lead story on the 12:00news,On the 6:00 news the story was buried halfway thru the broadcast, Interesting enough, the story was bumped by the tale of some white guy from an exclusive suburb getting shot while buying drugs in the innercity! By the 11:00 newscast my story was no where to be found! My view of the media changed completely through that experience.

bored1 .... " Its not about compassion or caring its about selling magazines off of others tragedy " ....

There you go, that about sums it all up. This happens far too much all over the world but I think what got my danders up was the fact that #1, Hockey is my favorite sport and this was something that has been a worry of any hockey player from the first time he or she put on skates and second, it happened in my neck of the woods.
I can accpet the fact that this is news worthy because it's a sport and it happened on the National level, but what I cannot accept is that People Mag felt they could shove their way into a moment of these folks life. They we're high profile like princess Di who was all about public image, this was a little girl from smalltown anywhere, being with her family at a NHL game for her birthday. It's about her family wanting to say goodbye to their little girl and their wish to be left alone until they made the choice on their terms as to talk to the media.
I have to hand it to her family though for if this would have been me, the news would have been making a big deal about one of their reporter having his balls ripped off and shoved down his throat.

news reporters suck

This past year between Xmas And Thanksgiving my 18yo son was murdered by his girlfriend and her brother. I was so glad that my phone # was unlisted and that people around town respected our privacy and left us alone.

i just finished my rant post for the day so i won't get on my soapbox on this one...all i'll say is that i've had no respect for tv reporters for a long time and if, god forbid, anything ever happened where i found them in my front yard they'd learn the meaning of the term "texas redneck".

pondman I can't even begin to think of how you feel, very sorry to hear of your loss

Thanks!

It's hard Because I don't even Know how I feel. :rose: :rose:
