In fact, I read somewhere that illegal residents contribute more to the economy than most, because they mostly do pay taxes, but can't claim a whole lot of stuff 'citizens' can because ... well, that's obvious really.

You read wrong. They like everyone pays sales taxes on the things that they consume. But generally there's no need for them to pay any employment taxes either because they are below the level where you pay any taxes and actually get money back if they have a semi valid social security number or they simply hop from one social security number to the other while filing exempt for on each one so that they have no taxes taken out.
About half of all people in America whether they're legal citizens are not don't pay any federal taxes at all. A good portion of those actually get money back in the form of what's known as an earned income credit.
No place with a large population of illegal aliens report any net benefit to their local taxes either. It's well-known that it's a net drain on school districts, it's a net drain on whatever version of Medicaid that that state has. At this point something like one third of all births in California are illegal aliens and paid for by Medicaid.

The short answer is 'yes, undocumented workers pay taxes, but they can't receive ANY benefits, so they contribute more to the pool than they take'. And because I've gone over it a thousand times, I'm not going over it again.
To answer the question, yes, we should socialize our medical system, for a plethora of reasons that I've also gone over a million times, not the least of which is it would be cheaper for EVERYONE. But the most pressing of which is that humans are social animals and if you're ok with letting people die of preventable diseases get the fuck out of my species. You're going against instincts that we spent millions of years honing for the express purpose of being a dick. It would be a better, cheaper, more preventative based-system. There is literally no downside, y'all are just mean.
Edit: Just also the sheer stupidity of that claim like how the fuck is somebody gonna get medicaid but not pay taxes? Your ability to get medicaid is BASED on your tax returns. So this person getting their birth covered by the medicaid insurance program can't be an undocumented immigrant because they HAVE to have documentation to apply to and qualify for the medicaid program.
So what you've said here, based on nothing with no reasoning behind it is a full third of people giving birth in the state of California, the state that consistently has the highest GPD in the union, are committing fraud.

Medicaid's a government program and you're gonna sit here and pretend like it's not steeped in bureaucracy. After the initial application, which you, again, have to have documentation for- not just on your citizenship status, but a FUCKTON of financial shit, including your taxes for the past fiscal year, you have to recertify at the beginning of every fiscal year with all new information.
