You say that, but I swear to god when I did taxes I really did meet people this stupid. I had somebody argue me up and down that their homebuyer's tax credit was just free money and nobody paid for it. I don't remember how it came up but they genuinely, hand-to-god, thought that. They thought somebody had to pay for EIC and child tax credits, but the the homebuyer's credit and mortgage subsidies were just free money, somehow? They weren't fucking with me. They hand-to-god, would swear it on a bible, thought that.

Oh, no, I do remember how it came up. They were that weird proud kind of redneck that "didn't want no charity" and made me explain every credit in detail to make sure it wasn't "welfare" and for some reason the house-related ones really fucked them up.
