Free Speech Contest Support Thread

I wonder why it is that I regret submitting anything already (and it's not even posted)?

Anticipating the worst?
I'm glad I wrote and submitted mine. I enjoyed the research and I enjoyed writing it. It was a nice change from writing porn, and I needed the practice writing a "real" essay since I'm going back to school in the fall. So I feel like I've benefitted from it, no matter what happens with votes and pcs.
Course it still sucks to get hit with the nastiness.

Even Bearlee's so-called rant is really quite restrained.

Cloudy, Angel. Bearlee: Wish I could write like that. Way to go, guys.

Well, I'll go back and do another one  But really, please don't wish to write like me. I've only ever written one thing I've considered any good out of 150 submissions, and this one certainly wasn't it-appreciate the kind words though :)

I think only three people so far: cloudy, bearlee, and Sean Renaud.

Actually Lauren, my vote count goes up and down, just like my score which has been from 4.83 to under 4 to around almost 4.6 last night to 4.40 right now, everyday but, if that's true, I think the contest should be stopped now :D even though I'm not really an American because of my geographic location, ie. Ohio and send me my money now so I can get outta Dumbfuckistan.

I thought Alicia had 25 votes-maybe not. Okay, back to my 30 day self-imposed exile to posting on any threads-best to all of you and see you sometime around the first or second week of June.

How Long?

My second entry is still pending.

My first entry is still short of votes for the minimum 25 now that trolls have been swept.

I'm not sure whether to write a third until I see how number two is received.

Anyone else waiting?

Og

Is anyone else having a problem with the contest enteries? I posted mine Tuesday morning and it still hasn't had a view and is still pending approval? Something strange going on?

Maybe the response to the entries posted so far has been disturbing?

Og

I'm still at 24 votes. I lost three instead of two yesterday when she swept. Still no views listed. Pretty odd stuff.

Dream, did you put "Free Speech Contest 2005" in the notes field?

Things are strange.

DP - I think I recall that your title includes the word pedophilia, if so, it might be receiving greater scrutiny despite being a Free Speech Comp. Just a thought.

Minx... I sure did... and you've read it.. so ??

Neon... that could be.. that word is there even in the title although it isn't arout pedophiles... except to say that free speech means they get to talk too.

You know I liked it, hon. Neon may be right, just the title might get it kicked or Laurel has to read it to be sure and hasn't had time. Og might be having the same problem.

Look at it this way, DreamGod :)D), you have a bit more time to thicken your skin. I'm pulling for you though, because I do think it deserves to be read. It's a well written, if controversial, piece.

The comments on your essay weren't that bad. Of course, I was pissed you didn't mention Catcher in the Rye

Lol! No, I've gotten some great comments. I've been kind of expecting someone to reply with a "you let your kid read that trash?" kind of thing, but I haven't gotten that.
Catcher in the Rye is a tricky one, which is one reason I didn't mention it. Actually, it hasn't been banned/challenged as often as some of the others I mentioned, which is pretty surprising. Most people have a love/hate thing with Salinger, I think. From my research, I can tell you one of the main reasons Catcher has been banned- "profane and vulgar language." Different organizations have actually counted the number of cuss words. There was a separate listing for "goddamn." I'll look it up and post it, cuz it's funny.

SJ

Catcher in the Rye-

One count had 295 instances of God's name being taken in vain and 860 total obscenities.

Another one counted 785 obscenities, including "22 hells, 27 Chrissakes and 7 hornys"

(from the book Banned in the USA)

Now, let me ask you a few questions:
is horny a bad word??
and if you don't like a book, why spend that much time counting all the profanities? I just don't get that at all.

Probably back then horny was. We weren't allowed to have it in school but someone snuck a copy in and I read. I really identified with Holden Caulfield for some reason. Maybe just a matter of the times. I was just a youngster and we're talking alot of years ago-ALOT! I'm not sure Lucy and big Dick were even in the same bed together even though they produced a little dick somehow. Why do people count all the profanities-so we can look 'em up I guess. It's actually a damn good book in my opinion and I don't buy into Holden having psychological problems at all-of course I identify with him.
