Free Speech Contest Support Thread

Bump.

Submissions start TOMORROW!

Get writing.

Og (who might have a few words to say on the subject)

A few words to say on the subject? Og, don't break the habits of a lifetime.

:rose: :rose:

Wow! You need some thick skins to post to this comp kiddies!

Never seen so many PC's, or regretably, so much ill-informed and downright rude opinion. I think Lit should organise a Bash the Bigot comp.

Submitted my first entry.

It is very short for me. I will wait to see how it fares before considering whether to write another.

I deliberately refrained from reading anyone else's until I had submitted mine so that I wouldn't be influenced. Now I have read the few already posted I have a few ideas churning around for the next one (or two, three...)

Og

Started the second entry.

I might have difficulty making the 750 word minimum. That is the problem with essays when there is a simple basic premise to put across.

Unless I do the full academic thing with quoted sources, arguments for and against and a highly qualified conclusion, I cannot see how I can make a single point last for 750 words without redundancy or repetition.

'Free Speech is good for democracy.'

Copy and paste 125 times to reach 750 words and once more to be the title.

That should do it.

Og

After four difficult revisions, I believe I'll be ready to submit by morning. :D Lord, I hope so. Be kind y'all? Not begging for 5's, but I'm hoping the piece is rated according to writing ability rather than opinion. I have read some of the comments on other pieces... whew. Neon, you sure weren't kidding!

I'm finishing mine up today, I think. The first draft at least. I don't think mine is controversial, but after seeing the comments on some of the others' I have no idea what to expect. I wonder if Laurel and Manu had any idea how vocal this contest would get.

(I don't have a thick skin. I may to hide behind someone who does!)

SJ... I'd let ya hide behind me anytime.. specially if we was neked!!!! The best protection is provided by close contact!!!!

I have a thick skin. However, would some kind person tell me how to deal with the 1 bombs (aside from having Laurel purge them)?

My personal view is to accept the 1 bombs posted with PC comments attached.

If you wish to reply to 'anonymous' I've bumped the thread onto the front page of AH, I've already posted there today ;)

I have a feeling Laurel may be reluctant to purge 1 votes - unless in duplicate from the same poster - it kind of goes against the spirit of the competion.

Best of luck.

I was hesitant to submit my essay for several reasons. First I would rather not be serious.

This is a very different case than the usual stories. I figured this would not be a popular contest. I think it will be harder to get the required votes and we will all draw more than our share of 1 bombs. These will be a different kind of 1 bomb than we are used to. There will be more legitimate 1 bombs and fewer trolls.

This is a topic which will draw a lot of negative feelings and more opponents to our views. If you write dry essay, you bore a bunch of people who want smut and wank stories. If you write dialog.... you have to take the characters to sides (not necessarily your own) to illustrate the point.. and guess what... fire!

There are no guidelines for people to vote. Some vote on wank factor.. if they vote at all.. we get 1 bombs. Some for skill of the writing.... maybe some of us have a chance (not me.. I just let my words fly).

I think the number of entries will be down and the number of votes as well as scores will be down as well. We are bound to piss off a huge chunk of the audience no matter what we say.. so just be prepared for low scores and comments even nastier than when writing about cheating wives in the loving wives category.

If you don't have a thick skin - does that mean you go pink very easily? :p

Stand behind me.

Serious, I'll keep a weather eye out for you.

Too true, but if the site's gonna work we have to do this. Agreed, this makes Loving Wives a lovefest.

Two pages to go and I submit (to the pirhanas).

I think I must be psychic.

The title of my first entry: Free Speech is Offensive seems to sum up the PCs that we entrants are getting.

How much more offensive can I get?

Og

You can! You know you can. ;)

Many thanks for your comments - it probably wasn't ironic enough. My next submission is the serious one, that 'conversation' popped into my head demanding to be written.

Anonymous in the USA strikes:

"Moron

Free speech isn't designed to be offensive. Free speech is designed to allow every American citizen to be able to speak their mind without fear of retaliation from the government. Does everyone need a refresher course in American history?

Free speech that offends someone is protected by the Supreme Court as long as that speech does not jeopardize any citizens. Review your American history before writing an essay like this next time. "

Why does Anonymous assume everyone is American? Free Speech existed long before the Declaration of Independence.

I assume L&M thought this through before they launched this contest.

There does seem to be too much based on the First Amendment and not enough on the 'I'll support yours if you stroke mine'.

I'll stroke yours!! :)

I know what you guys mean. I'm taking an American approach to mine, but I think alot of what I have to say applies other places. In fact, I know it does. I also don't think what I have to say is going to offend anyone. But I guess it will; seems even the essays I've read that I agreed with completely have pissed people off for some reason.

Cos few believe in the freedom of someone else to disagree with you and live.

I started one today. I guess I've completely and totally lost my mind this time.
