Wow. I confess I've always been a bit nervous of water travel, far more so than flying. A canoe or kayak on the lake, and near to shore is more my speed.

Yes, I concur, I'll most likely never be a boat owner. I'd like to instead spend my excess income on a cherry orchard!

The hovercrafts are basically a combination of both boat and aircraft since they float above the water surface on a cushion of air.

I actually know of someone who makes hand turned wooden *ahem* but I have no idea what wood she uses, never thought to ask.

Is that an "ahem" or an "ahhh" ??? :D

I suspect that the "Aahhh" is issued after the use of the hand-turned wooden 'Ahem'.

I like cherries a lot, no connotation to be found here. I could eat cherries every day for ever. I would share the cherries I would grow, yeah, might even sell them. However they'd mostly be for me. Once more, I like cherries a lot, they're my favourite fruit.

Okay, sorry. But it is the free association thread, somebody had to make something out of it. :rose: Now, I used to have a plan to plant the entire pasture across from my house with apple trees and make it a u pick orchard. Nowadays, I might just put it on the free fruit map. Maybe someday...

Sheesh! Now I'm craving a big slice of hot apple pie with a huge scoop of ice cream on top of it.

I tend more toward apple crisp. I sub out the sugar with maple syrup and often use olive oil in place of butter.

When I get elected president in 2020, I'm replacing all the weapons with apple crisp. Everyone will be so happy and full there will be no need to fight.

This, also, is one of two tenets of the platform I'm going to run on--the other is an extra day off each week to have sex. I'm keeping it simple for the masses.

Many, many, many years ago, I came across a poem called, I think, something like 'The Axe in the Cherry Orchard'. For some time, I thought that it may have been written by WS Merwin - but maybe not. I'd love to find it again.

Any more you remember about it? It sounds like it derives from Chekhov's stage direction:

"[...Silence ensues, broken only by the stroke of the axe on the trees far away in the cherry orchard.]"

A difficult sound effect to create, back in the day.
It rather depends upon the shape & sharpness of the axe head, I think.

Good thinking, Tio. I seem to recall that the sound of the axe in the cherry orchard was a metaphor for the artillery at the start of the First Wold War

Ah, if only it could work that way. I can't find it but I swear there was a song that said, "I'd like to buy the world a beer."

Don't fire till you see the whites of their eyes.
