Twenty-eight years ago this month, the step-brother of a guy I grew up with proved sometimes you don't need both engines or even most of the plane to keep it in the air and get it back on the ground safely.

At twelve seconds into the video, you can see Capt. Bob Schornstheimer standing in what was left of the first class cabin helping passengers. In true "I'm the captain" fashion, he refused to leave the plane until every passenger and crew member was off first.

Wife just showed me a video of a catastrophic air accident: two members of a stunt plane team attempting a 'thread the needle' manoeuvre (I think) collided in mid-air. She thought it was recent 'news' but listening to the announcer's voice it sounded like it was from the 1950s.

The Australian ones in newsreels from the mid twentieth century to the late 50s-60's are even worse. Such plummy accents before Australians realised they had perfectly usable ones.

No. I've even listened to recordings of myself, and I can't detect any trace of an accent. My diction is perfectly normal!

I've got my old Grandad's pocket knife - a so-called 'Western Castrator' to skin the thing. (watched a documentary last night on Yupik people - Siberian eskimos - who were busily skinning wolves, seals, whales, caribou etc, so I possibly could handle a snerk).
