Fox News flips out about Reza Aslan's book in an interview with Reza

Reza Aslan, a religious scholar with a Ph.D. in the sociology of religions from the University of California and author of the new book, “Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth,” went on FoxNews.com’s online show Spirited Debate to promote his book only to be prodded about why a Muslim would write a historical book about Jesus.

Because he is a religious scholar and Jesus is an important religious figure? Not every bio of Muhammad was written by a Muslim.

Did you watch it, though? Watch it. You'll want to crawl out of your skull, but watch it.

Check out the brilliant twitter parodies using hashtag #foxnewslitcrit

Love it. Favorite:

@libshipwreck Mr. Hemingway, don't you think it's a bit presumptuous of you to decide for whom the bell tolls?" #foxnewslitcrit

I have the wicked giggles.

@mikeyfranklin Mr Seuss, you are not only not a cat; you're not even wearing a hat. #foxnewslitcrit

Have you seen the Amazon reviews from people who haven't read even an excerpt from the book, obviously based on the Fox bullshit? Shameful.

I'm wading through them now.

A nation of ditto sheep.

I thought that too, but then I found one guy who had a really refreshing perspective. Did you know that the author is Muslim? This changes everything. I'm so glad he pointed that out.

well that's how you get your ass kicked when you interview an author whose book you have not bothered to read.

The real irony here is that Fox has been filled with Christian and Jewish commentators explaining Islam to their audience over the years.

Unfortunately, when I click the link, in the box where presumably the clip would play, I see only a sourpuss Siamese cat and the words "This content is not available for this platform. Too bad."

I've been having a lot of trouble playing vid-clips on certain sites anyway. (YouTube still works fine.) My computer is infected with that bastard virus that pretends to be an Adobe Flash Player update. I've tried every removal-software on the market. Apparently the only way I can get it out is take it to a computer store and have Windows reinstalled, which would cost more than hundred bucks. :(

And he is not a historian. Don't forget that part.

But I was able to find a text summary:

When interviewing religious scholar Dr. Reza Aslan about his new book, “Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth,” Green repeatedly and insultingly questioned why Dr. Aslan, a Muslim, felt compelled to write a book about Jesus.

Her first question to the esteemed scholar was bluntly: “I want to be clear, so you’re a Muslim. Why did you write a book about the founder of Christianity?”

Dr. Aslan responded, evidently rattled: “To be clear, I am a scholar of religions with four degrees, including one in the New Testament and fluency in biblical Greek, who has been studying the origins of Christianity for two decades, who also just happens to be a Muslim. So it’s not that I’m just some Muslim writing about Jesus, I am an expert with a PHD in the history of religions.”

Aslan’s answer, although undoubtedly quite compelling, was not enough to convince Green of his motives, and she continued to question the root of his intrigue in Christianity throughout the interview.

Finally addressing the substance of the book, the anchor then cited one of Aslan’s critics, who, in an online op-ed article for FoxNews.com, claimed that the book is marred by falsities. The critic charges that these falsities are part of Islamic doctrine, and doctrine that he believes Aslan seeks to advance in his book rather than provide historical truth. In actuality, Aslan contradicts many Islamic teachings in his book, which, as an academic, he wrote with the intention of being historically factual.

Forced to continuously repeat himself throughout the remainder of the interview, Aslan insists that “this isn’t a Muslim opinion. This is an academic work of history, not about Christ or Christianity for that matter, it’s about a historical man who walked the Earth 2000 years ago in a land that the Romans called Palestine."

Nitpick, Dr. Aslan: The Romans did not start calling Judea "Palestine" until after the Bar Kochba Revolt was crushed in 136. It means "Land of the Philistines." The name was chosen as a calculated insult to the Jews -- the Philistine culture had been extinct since long before the Babylonian Exile, but the Jews were known to have a history with the Philistines as their ancient enemies.

Awh, that's a bummer. Too much time spent in Pornland, cowboy. Wear a rubber next time!

Eve linked to the clip on Youtube in another thread, so maybe that will work?

Interesting interview. I'd like to read the book. He isn't the first non-Christian scholar to write about Jesus or Christianity. He just happens to be Muslim, which apparently makes him an idiot, according to Fox.

Good thing Fox News wasn't around when Martin Luther posted his theses.

:) Thanx!

 That woman does not appear to hear a word Aslan says. It's like she's gonna pose every pseudoquestion on her prepared list no matter what.
