Judaism is primarily an ethnicity. Non-Jews only assume it’s primarily a religion because Islam and Christianity stole so many of our traditions.

Israel wasn’t “given” to the Jews by the allies. The British actually tried to stop European Jews from fleeing to Mandatory Palestine during the Holocaust. A few Jews made it and banded together with the native Jews who had survived the Arab pogroms. When the Jews declared their independence, Britain was too weakened as a colonial power to stop them. The rebirth of Israel in 1948 was much like the rebirth of India as an independent nation at the same time.

The Jewish population of early Israel was increased by other Middle Eastern Jews who were driven out of Israel’s neighbors. There used to be large Jewish populations in Iran, Egypt, Jordan, Syria, and Yemen, but the Arabs expelled or killed most of them. Now only a handful of Jews remain in those places.
