I am moving soon to another state where I know about ten people. I have looked at tips and advice about how to meet people and explore my new community. What has actually worked for those who have moved to a completely new city? Any suggestions?

What I've always done is to get involved with hobbies and activities I enjoy. You'd be amazed at the number of people you'll meet. Volunteer usher for the local theater, be a docent for the local museum, historical society, or other organization you have interest in.

I'm a woodworker, so I joined the local WW group. It was mostly retired types (I was in my 20's at the time ), but still, I met lots of great like minded people and had access to their shops to do my own projects in until I could get my own shop set up.

I'm into remote control cars (monster trucks to be exact ), so I started finding local tracks and shops that catered to my interests and met a bunch of great guys.

I'm a home brewer, joined local forums and have met up with a lot of great people.

Join online forums for things your interested in, there are all kinds of folks who will be local to you, or within an easy drive to meet up with. If you're looking for meeting singles, there's groups for that too, or the clubs if you're into that sort of thing.

NM has it right. Join stuff. We have kids, so when we moved to this town, we started volunteering at the school, with Scouts, etc. Now it's as if we've lived here forever. Look for volunteer opportunities that interest you, then join up.

Thanks. I have joined several groups (including those for single parents) and will find some volunteering to do once I move.
