so last night, me and a few friends went to see my favorite band, Flogging Molly in philly, with the Dropkick Murphys. Ive been to ozzfest, warped tour, and lots of other concerts, but this beat them all.

anyone else like Flogging Molly? or celtic punk in general?

Celtic punk..*Smile*

I bet I would love it if I heard it.

Particularly after a shew fots of whisk... :D

ME!

I was exposed to Celtic Punk with Shane McGowan and The Pogues.

I've heard a bit of Dropkick, and of Flogging Molly, but I don't know what's the best of either band. On my downloads, I see that I have "Kiss My Irish Ass" and "Seven Drunken nights" and neither one of those excite me very much...
Of Dropkick I have "Pilly's Bones" which is a Pogues song anyway.

Give me suggestions, please!

I have songs from both bands... I'm interested in Celtic music of all types.

For those interested, here is the URL to the site the Dropkick's have for their new album preview... includes a couple songs playing as the background for the site.

...people that haven't heard them before are most likely to recognize them from the song they did for The Departed .

"Sickbed Of Cuchulainn" is on my top ten list also. "A pair of Brown Eyes"-- I liked that song, but when I heard Christy Moore's version, I broke down and cried, I kid you not.

I know I've heard of them, and I may have seen them but can't recall for sure. There used to be an Irish pub here in town that had live bands on Fridays and/or Saturdays, but they cut it back to kareoke several years ago and I'm not sure what they do (if anything) these days.

You heartless sod. I was delighted with my vacation for all of five minutes after logging on to Lit. Now I'm seething with envy.

(Good for you - sounds like a hell of a concert. :D)

Have you heard of the new band we're forming here at Lit-- Flogging Shanglan? Celtic, Renaissance and Late Victorian punk.

*laugh* Listen to Black 47 doing "Danny Boy" as a song about a gay construction worker. It's a grin.

My favorite song by Flogging Molly is "Death Valley Queen," a beautiful raw passionate thing. By the Dropkick Murphys, I'm terrribly partial to "Finnegan's Wake" and "The Skinhead on the MTBA."

I've never heard anything else by them, but there's a band called "Brace Yourself, Bridget" that did my favorite version of "Whiskey in the Jar" - more traditional sound than the above bands, but fast and hard enough to remind you that it is, after all, about some lively action.

Picking a favorite Pogues song, for me, is like picking a favorite book. Impossible. "Lorelei" is a beautiful song, but I have a terrible weak spot for "Bottle of Smoke" - grand song, impossible not to sing along to once you've deciphered the lyrics (no small feat with the pace and Shane's pronunciation). From their older songs, I think "I'm a Man You Don't Meet Every Day" wonderfully sweet and soothing.

Oh, God bless you and the horse I pray you ride off on. ;)

"Shipping Up to Boston" is the theme song of Lobster Wars on Discovery Channel, which gives me a chuckle every time I see a commercial for it.

Love Dropkick Murphys. It's a great thing to have punk/rock with bagpipes. Perfection, in my opinion.

Death Valley Queen is another favorite, im telling you, it takes special groups of people to pull off tin whistle solo's and have a bunch of punkers in the pit think its the coolest thing ever.

So, how about another contribution to the Flashfic this fine Friday evening? I'll trade you a PM for one.

That's what I've always loved about the Pogues - their ability to sing a line like "whack-fol-de-do-dol-de-diddly-idle-ay" and make it sound like "what the fuck are you lookin' at?" ;)

Direct translation, I think!

I love Boiled In Lead! Omg, I thought no one else had ever hear of them. :)

I've seen Flogging Molly. It was one of my favorite shows.
