Fix clothes?

You could try a few stitches on one end of the tear to see if sewing it will work (you can always take tose out with what we call a seam ripper or a tiny pair of sewing scissors if it looks bad), but your friend may have a point. Depending on the tear (size, shape, location, etc.) and texture of the fabric, you might be able to use an iron-on patch on the INSIDE/back of the tear. Of course you'll want to be very careful to follow the instructions and make sure the iron's not too hot for the nylon (you might be able to use towels on both sides of the jacket to guard against melting the fabric)I've done this successfully with synthetics a couple of times, and the tears weren't noticeable.

However, I'd suggest taking it to a professional (seamstress maybe?) if it's really important and worth the cost to see what they might be able to recommend and do, or if you're set on trying it yourself, take it to a fabric/sewing store and ask for advice on what products and methods are your best bet.

I thought about getting some black thread (to match the colour) to sew the gap shut but another friend who was there at the time doesn't think it'll work too well, because of the material. So I thought I'd ask if anyone had any ideas of experience of mending things like this. The material is quite.. synthetic and plasticy, it's composition is 100% nylon. Thanks in advance for any help! :)

Sewing the rip with thread is probably a good idea as a temporary repair until you can take it to some sort of professional.

A drycleaner might be a good place to get information on how to do a proper/permanent repair -- at least here in the US, drycleaners often deal with repairs and alterations as well as simple cleaning and most at least have some sort of arrangement with seamstresses if they don't employ them in-house.

I was in my buddy's old land rover truck a couple of days ago and I caught my nice jacket on a part of the chassis and tore it open. Anyone got any ideas to fix it? Alot of it depends on where the tear is. If you ripped a seam, that is usually a simple fix. If you tore the fabric itself, not at the seam, then you definitely should check with a professional. I dont' know where you live, but I've never paid more than 10 dollars to have something altered/repaired by a seamstress. And I sew, so the only things I take her are difficult fixes.

If the jacket is nice, and you want it to look good, you really should let someone who knows what they are doing fix it. Even sewing up a simple seam, it can end up looking 'puckered' if not done correctly.
