Firsts

I’m not sure if the age, but it would have been the Atlantic off the coast of South Carolina where my family had property. I never enjoyed being in the ocean, much prefer pools.

First time you turned down a job?

Was at an office supply store on Cape Cod. I was 35. They wanted me to work 40 hours a week in the store. The pay for that wasn't bad. But, they wanted me to also make deliveries on my own time for no pay, in my vehicle. In MA, at least at that time if you used a vehicle for work, by law, you had to carry a million dollar umbrella policy. No bueno.

When was the first time you got really sick?

6 months old. I suddenly couldn’t hold anything down, my hair fell out, and I was left lactose intolerant for a year or so. Apparently the doctors were quite worried for me. But, that was the first and only time I’ve been really sick.

First time you had literally no sleep between two days?

Wow it was probably college - but I know it happened while I was in labor. Three days. There’s a reason sleep deprivation is a torture tactic.

First favorite cuisine type?

Mexican food! Although my first one was a bastardization. When we lived in Wichita, my parents loved going to A&W drive in. You dined in your car and they would clip a tray on your open window to hold the food. I hated rootbeer and ice cream still do. And as a kid, I would not eat burgers or fries or other things that kids normally ate.

We were going there once again and I pitched a fit because I didn't want to go. But we went anyway. That's when I saw the burrito on the menu. I demanded that I get that! My brother wasn't born yet so I was only two. My parents tried to talk me out of it but I insisted. I remember them laughing, telling me that I wouldn't like it, but I insisted that I would!

Aside from it being deep fried and hella hot, I fell in love at first bite. Little round, green peas greeted me. Peas were a favorite food. There was some kind of meat. Probably cheese. Never saw a burrito like that again, but I LOVED going to A&W after that and would even gag down a mug of rootbeer to get the burrito!

When I got married and moved away, my mom said she and my dad didn't eat Mexican food for a year because they were so tired of eating it!

What was your first real passion?

This lying little fucker in my daycare. He told me he had been shot by a gun in the heart but he was okay. I mentioned it to my parents. They told me he was lying. I remember being so mad he lied to me.

First time you had a crush.

I think it was Babylon Zoo’s Spaceman single. I’m a bit hazy, I got a few CDs in a short period of time then, but that sounds about right.

First time you significantly changed hairstyle?

I had poker straight hair until puberty and never learned how to tame my curls. But I recently started to color my hair in ‘alternative’ colors (not blue. Don’t worry). That’s probably as drastic as I’ve gotten. My boss didn’t even notice for over a year.

I was 14 or 15. I'd gone to live with my father and step-mother two years prior, and this was my first visit back to see my mother. I hadn't yet been told that she was bi-polar, that her fits of rage weren't my fault, but two years away had given me enough perspective to understand that intuitively.

She started losing control and throwing a tantrum, and for the first time, I saw the reality of the situation and decided i was not going to be sucked back in to her world, her truth. For the first time, I stood my ground and allowed myself to be angry with her. I yelled at her, 'You're crazy!' and called my grandmother to come pick me up.

Not particularly eloquent, but it was a pivotal moment in our relationship.

First time you travelled to another city by yourself?

College, heading back after Thanksgiving break freshman year. And since I came from a small town in Pennsylvania, it would be first time traveled to a city alone, not another city. :D

First crush

It was kindergarten and his name was Jimmy. I had a crush on him all the way through high school.

In college I went to visit a friend who attended a different university and it happened to be the same school Jimmy attended. We ended up at the same party and had a wonderful make-out session. It was magical.

Years later - he's a hot mess. Dropped out of school, lost the family farm to gambling debts and is currently living in his ex-wife's basement.

First time you lived completely on your own (no roommates, no help paying bills, etc.).

When I got my first job out of college. Moved into an apartment in a big old Victorian in the downtown area of the city where I was working. Was a big rambling place that still showed some of the glory of what it once was. The bedroom was big enough for an Olympic sport and had all of these neat built-ins. I was certainly glad I didn’t pay the heating bill, ‘tho.

What was the first piece of “new” furniture you ever bought?

I think it was a dining table and chairs from Montgomery Ward when I got married almost 30 years ago...still have that table (not as our dining table but a craft/game table in the basement.

When I got scholarship offers for college in music performance. I never played because I wanted to, though. Only because others wanted me to and I thought I was supposed to, and that I’d grow to like it.

First time you really gave up?

First time you really gave up?

About a month and a half after my dad’s suicide... I was also going through a divorce with an abusive husband, the guy I had started seeing decided I was no longer dateable because I couldn’t have another kid. I was home alone. I went to the local store and bought a big bottle of rum and a 2 liter of Diet Coke. I brought it home and filled a giant glass with alcohol and soda and ended up drinking the entire fucking bottle. I was laying in the middle of my living room floor just screaming at a photo of my dad asking how he could do this to us...I was also screaming other things. My phone was blowing up and I wouldn’t answer it. An hour later, my best friend came over and picked me up off the floor, sat me down on the couch. She let me continue crying and screaming for awhile and then she made me stop and drink some water, she put our favorite movie in the DVD player and rubbed my head while I cried. We got through the movie and she put me to bed.

When everything first happened, I had to step up and take care of everyone else. I didn’t get to grieve. I had to make funeral arrangements, deal with the media, answer phone calls, find music and a pastor, console my mom and sisters - even though I’m the youngest by 12 years.

That day on my living room floor, I didn’t just break I fucking shattered. I gave up on everything and had no desire to be around anymore. I wanted to die, too.

First time you were ever on a stage?

First time you tried online dating?

Only recently (like 2 or 3 years ago). I met my husband online, but it wasn't organized dating. I recently joined Tinder (for shits and giggles) and met two really interesting guys. It's not really the right scene for me anymore, though.

First obsession ?

Baseball. I spent hours and hours throwing a ball against the wall.

Manchester to Heathrow, in 2016. The thing about flying is that nobody had told me the wings are meant to flex a little. But otherwise, I loved the feeling of it. Although I was sure I'd forgotten some piece of ID or pass that I'd need... a fear that's with me every time I fly, even now. Maybe that's a Brit thing, though? I could believe that...
