Firsts

First time you had to fix something by yourself/with minimal help?

It was probably replacing a flush handle for the toilet when I was living with my mum. Not very complex, didn't involve plumbing, so I figured I could manage. Got the only replacement handle I could find at short notice, a crappy one from the local DIY store, and it broke within 3 months, but the next one was decent and has lasted since.

First time you walked away from something.

Graduate school. I knew right away it wasn’t for me. Not just the actual school but being an academic. And every day, I’m reminded of why it wouldn’t have worked.

First disappointment?

The girl who didn't turn up when I was 11. (I had a happy childhood, is that bad?)

First mountain climb?

First crush?

Liza Snyder - First grade. (The actress from "Yes Dear") She was a classmate.

What was your first apartment like?

Oh man, my first apartment was huge. Across the street from a hospital so ALWAYS loud. And the kitchen was total shit. I can't believe I was able to cook anything. Lovely fireplace. No neighbors. Probably horribly unsafe in terms of living alone in a big city as a female.

First roommate, if ever?

Boarding school, aged 13. We got on well but were moved to separate digs after a year.

First irrational fear?

Crabs. Before an imminent beach holiday in Cornwall, my father told me they walked sideways and for some reason this absolutely terrified me. I interrogated my parents relentlessly about it all the way to Cornwall in the car. 8 hours, or so. And when we got there, we didn't see a single one.

First food-gasm?

First food-gasm?

First time I had a Chinese takeaway. Food was very, very plain until I was about 7, maybe 8, when my mum got divorced - that guy did not like any food that wasn't 'traditional', and food was pretty boring when he was around. But then, with some space, mum started making and buying the food she wanted to, and it was fantastic. This was before I'd tried Indian, Thai, anything like that. Hell even pasta, aside from those hoops in a can, had been too 'exotic' or 'foreign'. But this was sweet and sour pork balls, and hoisin veg, and I could not believe how amazing food could be. Really wonderful moment :)

Like a speech?
My junior year of HS I was running for district FHA office and had to give a speech in front of a few hundred other FHA members and their advisors. I was elected VP of my my district. I remember getting nervous and talking really fast.

First album purchased?

I bought my first brand new car at 18 (my dad had to co-sign for me) it was a red Ford Ranger truck and it cost me $7200 brand new. I loved that truck!

Fright Night. I was four. Not sure why my parents let me watch a movie about vampires when I was four. But they did. I watched that movie over and over.

And there are boobs in that movie. And I remembered that.

First time you saw the opposite sex naked (provided you’re over 18- take that, mods).

My dad accidentally rented the porn version of the Three Musketeers from the video store for family movie night. I’ve never seen my mom move that fast ever.

It was a video I found on my dad's laptop circa 1999 of a woman having a wine bottle inserted in her anus and then excreting the contents.

What was the first non-titillating thing that aroused you (with the usual provisos)?

A faux fur blanket with freshly shaved legs. That, or a shampoo at a salon.

First real regret?

First time you knew you weren't invincible?

When I jumped off a swing set, mid swing, and broke my arm. Gravity won then.

First time you knew your parent wasn't invincible?

My dad suffering from hypothermia on a canoe trip in Maine.

First time that you realized that life wasn't going to be what you expected?

That's a deep question that's actually hard to answer. I guess when I was 24 and moved to America to marry my husband. I gave up (temporarily) my career in medicine to start over. I felt like such a failure on the career side of life, as I learnt after I moved here that my degree didn't translate and I'd need to redo certain courses and another residency. It felt like the end of the world at the time... I look back now with amused delight at my naivety.

First major bodily injury?
