A feature request that would add meaning (currently absent) to the business of "following" someone, be they an author or chatter. The definition of a person you follow should trigger a useful action when appropriate, as follows:

1) For an author you follow, a notification that they have posted a new story.

2) In a chat situation, there should be a *real time* notification that someone you follow has joined the chat site.

This functionality would be useful to everyone, I think! As someone who has been on the site for 25 years, I know I'd appreciate it!

Thanks and I hope it's given due consideration!

1) What New -> Your News Feed might already do this. I don't follow any authors so other people would have a better idea.

2) The forum and chat are two entirely separate bits of software and they aren't going to talk to each other. On a broader note, having the same person jump on you with a PM every time you're in chat gets annoying really fast, and that's coming from a male user. Female users have it much worse, and aren't going to appreciate a virtual stalking facility that alerts random people as soon as they enter the chat rooms. If you want to meet someone in chat, just arrange a time and log on together.

Confirming what @drusus says, if you follow someone you receive a notification in your Control Panel when one of their stories posts. Like they also said, the forums and the story site and the chat are different and unconnected pieces of software, so you don't get notifications from any of them in the others.

(At first I read your name as "drsus"--"Doctor Seuss".)

My user name comes from Marcus Livius Drusus who was a reformist Roman politician. The 'Dr' thing has come up a few times and I should have thought of that before I chose it. A Doctor Seuss based name would have been more fun too.
