Sarah McLachlan's cover of "Blackbird" was to die for.

Pearl Jam's (or was it just Eddie Vedder solo?) cover of "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away" was excellent as well.

And while we're on Beatles' covers, there was a cover of "Because" on the 'American Beauty' soundtrack, though I cannot for the life of me remember which group it was that covered it. It's absolutely riveting.

Agreed...

One cover tune I really like is the new one of "Tweeter And The Monkeyman" by a band that I can't recall right at the moment.. The Traveling Willberrys I think originally did that one, and it's so much better as a hard rocking song.

marilyn manson - tainted love
pearl jam - keep on rocking in the free world
gnr - sympathy for the devil
kiss - rock n' roll radio
drain sth - ace of spades

(this post brought to you from the year 2001 by the miracle of the information superhighway)

All of the covers that come to mind have already been hit upon by others here, except the great cover of Gary Numan's 'Cars' as done by Fear Factory with Gary sitting in. Of course I love the original....
How about the version of 'Slam' that Onyx teamed up with Bio-Hazard to do....? that was fucking ripping.....

If anyone picked up that DVD/Bonus CD set that tool put out about a year ago you were treated to a very pristine rendition of Zep's 'No Quarter'.
Or what about Phunk Junkeez kinda covering Kiss' 'i love it loud'?....that's a really fun song...and speaking of Kiss I always liked Dinosaur Jr's version of 'Goin Blind'....
Pantera did a fresh version of 'Planet Caravan' by Sabbath.

An oldie but a goodie is 'Higher Ground' as done by the Red Hot Chili Peppers....

oh and that version of 'Fat Albert' by Dig on that Saturday morning cartoon soundtrack comp.

I guess I had a few more rattling around in my head after all.....

Dig This

Did anyone mention "Gin and Juice" as covered by The Gourds?

man, I'm tired of killing threads.

You've got a way about you IFB. ;)

i like girlie, artsy stuff.
That said...
i love Tori Amos' cover of the Rolling Stones' Angie, and her version of Leonard Cohen's "Famous Blue Raincoat"... Peter Gabriel's version of "Suzanne" is also quite good.
i don't think i'd be a good Canadian if i didn't mention that the Cowboy Junkies did a great version of the Velvet Underground's "Sweet Jane", Great Big Sea's version of "It's The End of the World as We Know It" or the Barenaked Ladies version of "Lovers in a Dangerous Time".

i could probably go on for hours, but those were the first to pop into my head.

I like your other choices but I think I heard Buddy Holly roll over in his grave when I read this one.

I never said it was better, I said I liked it. The harmonies are more pronounced and well done.
