Al'ika nodded and led the way back to their town. She placed the women in Father Hallowbrook's and curled up in her usual part of the chapel after sneaking away from the boys to cry quietly.

The soft hand in her hair, and knowing it was Keth's, soothed Al'ika a little bit, but she continued to cry. She didn't allow her face to be raised, it remained buried in her hands and knees.

Al'ika soon fell asleep, upset and confused, but her body wanted sleep, and so it got sleep.

A few hours later, seeing Flish come toward her, ready to seek revenge on her in a dream, she sat straight up, her skin drenched in sweat, her heart pounding like a rabbit in a trap.

Keth, who had been keeping watch over her, grabbed his blade. "You hear something?" he asked, seeing her pant and sweat.

Al'ika shook her head. "No. . . didn't hear anything. . . Just had a bad dream," she said, laying back down again, still breathing hard.

Al'ika woke up early the next morning. She was tired and groggy, but she couldn't sleep any more. Getting up and sliding out of Keth's embrace, she cooked a quick breakfast and kept Keth's portion warm. Scribbling a quick note, she made her way to Father Hallowbrook's.

Sitting in her pew, she began to pray quietly, tears rolling down her cheeks, wondering where the good priest was.

Hallowbrook walked in, looking like he hadn't slept all night. He sat down next to her and said, "The girls will be fine. They will stay here until they are ready to go. What is troubling you?"

"Flish is alive, Father," Al'ika said. "Flish is alive and now I'm scared. . . Hurt. . . Upset. . . For heaven's sake, he should've died. . . . I burned him and stabbed him. . . How did he live?" She let out a soft sob.

"He was running to the castle, and you found him very close. It would take powerful magic to revive him, but it could be done," he said thoughtfully, hugging her close.

Al'ika nodded and shook with hidden sobs. "I dreamed about him last night, coming for me. . . You know, like he did when I dumped his ass. . . Father, I'm scared. . ."

Al'ika nodded. "I think I need more sleep," she whispered softly, raising to her feet. "Thank you, Father," she said quietly before making her way out of the chapel and back home, where she crawled back into bed.

Keth, who had grabbed a few more hours, awoke when she got back in bed. "How things go?" he asked, concerned.

"Okay, I guess," Al'ika said, curling back up in their bed. She wrapped the blankets around her tightly and looked up at Keth with a smile that didn't quite reach her eyes. "I'm fine."

Al'ika just curled up and shook her head. "It's nothing, Keth. I'll be fine," she said softly. She closed her eyes and breathed deeply, trying to calm down.

Al'ika fell back asleep, but it was restless and she tossed and turned. A few hours later, she woke up for the final time that day and dragged herself out of bed and ate what she could, although it wasn't much.
