Keth was seated like he wanted to say something important. "Keth can't guard you if pretty human doesn't tell him what to fight," he said, reverting to their conversation in his guard quarters.

Al'ika shook her head. "Pretty human needs to deal with this alone," she said softly. "Pretty human very scared. . ."

"Keth knows," he said, holding her against his chest. Someone knocked at the door. Keth let Issak in, and said, "I hope this isn't a bad time, but one of the girls just said something I think you two need to hear."

Al'ika nodded. "Alright, let's go," she said softly, getting up. She grabbed a cloak, feeling cold, and she made her way to Father Hallowbrook's and sat down next to the girl. "Hey. . . my brother said you knew something?" she asked softly.

The girl looked up from under her disheveled brown hair. "Thank you for rescuing me," she said. "I don't know how much longer I would have lasted. I'm Fate. The horde you rescued me from was dispatched from Castle Ashglow after the recent herb raid. They stormed into town and took us when no one knew anything and refused to talk about the revolt that had started. Flish took me and said I was practice for his next run-in with some adventurer, I think it was Al'ika."

Al'ika let a tear leave her eye. "I'm so sorry. . . He was referring to me," she confessed quietly. "I'm sorry that you had to endure that. Thank you for telling us this. . ." She gently kissed the girl's cheek. "I'm so sorry, Fate. . ."

"It's not your fault, things just happened," she said, holding and comforting her savior. "Can I stay with you and your orc friend? Father Hallowbrook is nice, but sleeping in a church pew gets very uncomfortable."

Al'ika nodded. "We have some room," she said softly. "And a bed with homemade blankets." She looked up at Keth. "You mind running home and getting everything set up?" she asked him. She held the girl she saved. "We'll help you mend, and you can stay with us for as long as you need, alright?"

Keth nodded and kissed her before heading home. Fate watched him leave with a puzzled look on her face. "He isn't like the ones Ashglow sent. Where did you find him?"

Al'ika smiled. "In Ashglow's dungeons. He was the guard captain. He saved me, when I was trapped there. Ashglow held his children hostage and killed his wife." She looked at her.

Fate looked stunned. "I never would have thought an orc would be a good man. I guess I have a lot to learn now that home is over a week away," she said, following Al'ika.

Al'ika smiled as she led the girl to her home. "When you're ready, I'll let Isep know," she said. "She's in charge of a bandit group up there, but she's honorable. She can take you home and keep you safe."

Keth had a roaring fire and chicken and vegetables ready when the girls came home. He was working with his shirt off. He poured three huge mugs of something labeled, "Orc Grog" that he had picked up on the way and sat down, "Where she sleep?" he asked.

"She's sleeping in the spare bed," Al'ika said. "We can put it in the other room, so she has her own space." She sat Fate down and gave her some food. "There you go," she said.

Fate looked dumbfounded as she looked up at the huge, well-muscled orc. "How do you handle that?" she whispered. "I've just had my first and he felt huge already."

Fate took a tentative sip of her drink and made a face. "What is this?" she asked. Keth smiled and said, "Orc beer. Someone just had a keg." He got her a new flagon with mead in it and handed it to her. "Better?" She took a sip and nodded. Soon Keth had the food on the table and Fate ate quickly, like she hadn't eaten in days.

Al'ika drank the orc beer and enjoyed it a little bit, and she ate slowly. "Careful, I don't want you to choke or get sick, would you like more?" she asked Fate as she ate and drank. "When was the last time you had a good meal?"

"Other than table scraps from the goblins? almost as long as they had me," she said quietly, passing her plate for more.

Al'ika nodded and she filled the girl's plate again. "Well, eat and drink your fill, and we can let you get a good night's sleep," she told her.

Fate ate a little more chicken and a lot more vegetables before climbing into bed and stretching out onto her first soft sleeping surface in a long time. She fell asleep almost immediately. Keth smiled as he cleaned up. "It good she safe," he said.

"Next time I see Flish, there will be no way that he will live," Al'ika growled softly as they cleaned up. She tucked the blankets in more firmly around Fate, noticing she was shivering slightly, and banked the fire. "Although I understand why she's scared," she added, drawing her cloak around her tighter.
