President Obama has changed the rules on funding for aid agencies that promote family planning.

Medical News

US AID can now be given to organisations that hand out condoms and advise on family planning.

This decision may have a major impact on the spread of AIDS in Africa without costing the US a cent more.

Will he change the rules inside the US too?

Tell us, if the Limeys are so hot for family planning, how come you dont spend your own money for it? You guys seem to have an appetite for anything someone else pays for.

Bush already did a massive program like that for Africa. But the question at hand is, why are American taxpayers forced to pay for this shit?

Because the Brits are freeloaders who wanna call the tune but not pay the piper.

We do pay. We have paid and still pay considerable sums to Africa for family planning. That money comes from our government and from charities funded by ordinary people. I know several people locally who visit an area of West Africa two or three times a year taking money and supplies raised in our town. They have built a school, a church, a medical clinic (that gives away condoms) and are raising money to expand the school and turn the clinic into a hospital. They are helped by our local churches (the members of the Catholic Church subscribe but not officially), schools, clubs, the Masons and many others.

What has changed is that the US government wouldn't pay any money to any aid organisation that gave out condoms or promoted family planning. That meant that many of the organisations UK people funded were ineligible to handle US funds - even if they were the most effective on the ground.

He already has.

On his second day in office he overturned Bush's executive order banning abortion funding for charitable groups overseas. He restored Federal funding to international groups that provide abortions or give advice on the issue, either here at home or globally.

The story I hear is: Anglos are totally discredited with the Africanos because of the colonial treacheries perpetrated by officials and clergy sent to Africa to enslave them. That is, Africanos dont use contraceptives because they cant trust the Euro's motives.

Thank you for that, Cloudy.

We Brits pay more per head in international aid than the US - and we do it more effectively - Real Aid

But the Irish are much better than we are.

Obama released money for spinsters with moustaches and bachelors with no chins to distribute rubbers no one will use.

We're not "forced" to do anything. The people that we elected to office are the ones that vote for the humanitarian aid given. If you don't like it, run for office yourself, and change it.

We do it because it's the right thing to do. Period. Why is that so hard to comprehend for you?

Both Bushes' administrations spent considerable amounts of US taxpayers money on helping poor people abroad.

They thought it was the right thing to do.

All that has changed is removing a restriction that impeded the effectiveness of that money.

Exactly. :)

Is that the new definition of bipartisanship? One side decides what is right and wrong?

Yes, we're forced to do it. Try not paying your taxes and see what happens.

I guess this means you're ok with funding the Iraq war and should shut up about that.

Why are you bitching about it now? Bush was spending large amounts in humanitarian aid to Africa, as well.

Perhaps you should do some research before you start bitching. Might keep you from looking really stupid in the future, although I doubt it. You really can't seem to help yourself at all.

Comparing humanitarian aid and war? Are you really that fucking dense?

Oops! A large amount of the US Aid money is committed to Iraq and Afghanistan. US administrations have counted a considerable part of their military activities as "humanitarian aid" - for years.

Unfortunately the UK is prone to use the same "accounting".

Duh. I said that above, dipshit.

Sigh. Deflecting the discussion is not a debate tactic, neither are ad hominem attacks. This is simple. You said that if the government does something, I have to accept it. I said that means you have to accept the Iraq war, based on the same logic.

Oh yeah. Logic doesn't work on liberals. What was I thinking.

That was an excellent change, and one that I expected Obama to do. Theoretically, abstinence is the best method of AIDS prevention and birth control, but it is not practical. Condoms are the most practical method, being cheap, etc.

A lot of people will complain about sending US money as foreign aid, and they have a certain point, especially in hard times. However, if we are going to send it, which seems to be the case, at least send what will do the most good.

A large part of it is strictly humanitarian. What else would you call building schools and hospitals and water treatment plants?

No, that is not what I said. Apparently you have reading comprehension issues as well.

I said that if you don't like it, work to change it. Bitching and moaning changes nothing.

I think it will be helpful if do-gooders study the history and cultures of Africans.

From what I've read, family planning has zero chance of success in Africa because sex and making babies is what they do. Sex, for many Africans, is like our use of money.
