Bettas, the Siamese Fighting Fish: I need some information about possible tankmates. Any ideas or suggestions? Where's StarFish when you need her?

Yeah, a lot of different Rift Lake species are readily available these days - but it takes some specialized water chemistry to keep them happy (the lakes are very hard and alkaline), so they haven't become as popular as the South American cichlids with fishkeepers.Starfish said:Are they available for sale on the pet market?

Pseudotrophus zebra is the most commonly seen Rift Laker in the pet trade - it comes in a lot of different natural colour morphs and is easy to breed in captivity. And for a fish, zebra's are smart as hell - makes 'em troublesome, but fun: they're a lot more like pets then most fish, kinda like Oscars (but unlike with an Oscar, you don't need a 100gallon tank for a zebra)

Myst, I would start out with those. They are easy, and they come in such pretty arrays of colors.
Don't buy dyed fish though. That usually kills them prematurely, or you end up with a sick looking fish when the dye fades.
This is commonly done with glassfish. But many mollies and platys are died, so be sure to ask if they use dye on the fish.
Good luck and have fun fish shopping!
