Bettas, the Siamese Fighting Fish: I need some information about possible tankmates. Any ideas or suggestions? Where's StarFish when you need her?

I had a tank for a while with angel fish and tiger barbs and those scum sucking ones, etc. and when I talked to an employee at the place I got fish they said you could put a betta in with any of them, just not another betta. I was too worried to try it out but the guy did know what he was talking about fish wise so I don't think he was wrong...you might want to call around and check first.

Did Cheyenne see me here? lol.

sure, you need me now.

I am useless the rest of the time huh? ;)

Your main answer is....

Anything but OTHER BETTAS. Or Chiclids/Angel fish, as they are meat eaters and will have your betta looking like shit in no time.

Just for clairifications sake....Catfish are Corys, and there are many kinds, some that get huge and others that stay tiny. I have some little guys and I love em. They are call Pygmy cory cats. All are bottom feeders.

Chiclids are a carnivorous fish classed from several species.

Vail-tail angels would be safe with a betta - they are pretty low-key compared to regular angels - and any peaceful cichlids that stick to the middle or lower tank would be fine since bettas stick to the top (but avoid anything that looks betta-like). Other than that, lots of barbs and tetras would get along with a betta, most catfish, in fact pretty well anything that's not very aggressive and doesn't look like a betta. :)

Starfish - don't forget about those weirdo cichlids from the Rift Lakes (my favs :D): there are a few veggie and omnivorous cichlids out there!

Are they available for sale on the pet market? If not, then I wouldn't know about them, and I live in a pretty narrow area, where fish keeping is concerned. There is very little variety here.

I have to travel two hours to get what I want. :(

Yeah, a lot of different Rift Lake species are readily available these days - but it takes some specialized water chemistry to keep them happy (the lakes are very hard and alkaline), so they haven't become as popular as the South American cichlids with fishkeepers.

Pseudotrophus zebra is the most commonly seen Rift Laker in the pet trade - it comes in a lot of different natural colour morphs and is easy to breed in captivity. And for a fish, zebra's are smart as hell - makes 'em troublesome, but fun: they're a lot more like pets then most fish, kinda like Oscars (but unlike with an Oscar, you don't need a 100gallon tank for a zebra)

Well, I did more research on the subject, and found that one person preferred Platies and Mollies for Betta companions. I don't really want a female Betta for him, because I really don't want to take care of the fry. I know that the males hate each other. My betta, King Henry the Fish (Monk named him), chases his own reflection. He's going to give himself a heart attack. I really like Neon Tetras, and the Glowlight tertras, but I don't want them to be fish food. He looks a lot like this:

Fishie, I'm going to send you a whopping email soon.

Thanks for bumping this, Cheyenne.

Wow, I bet I could do a tank of them here. My water is at a ph of 8 and I always have to soften it for my tanks. I know I can get them in Columbus, if they are available on the market, cause Aquarium Adventure has a huge selection, so that is cool to know. Thank you.

Myst, I would start out with those. They are easy, and they come in such pretty arrays of colors.

Don't buy dyed fish though. That usually kills them prematurely, or you end up with a sick looking fish when the dye fades.

This is commonly done with glassfish. But many mollies and platys are died, so be sure to ask if they use dye on the fish.

My favorite is the Marigold Mollie. They are very viberant orange with a black tail. They are colorful without dye. I have some Mollies I got a while back, that are silver, blue and black, and they are beautiful without dye too.

Good luck and have fun fish shopping!

I know. Isn't that totally pathetic that they do that?

See, My guy in Columbus will tell me if they dye a tank or not, so I won't buy from those tanks.

It is a very common practice. :(

I reccomend to anyone who is serious about fish keeping, to get a good sales rep and go to them only and see if they'll tell you this shit when you ask. I swear most won't care about telling you the truth, but owners hate that, because those are the quantity sellers, because they are cheap.

crap. I hate that shit.

Yes, I did some research a while back on painted glass fish and dyed parrot fish.
