Everything Baseball

As an Angeleno near the LA/OC border, I can tell you Dodgers are already at the top of league attendance most years, and Angels tix were regularly sold for $2+fees even when they had Ohtani. He can't make THAT much of a difference in ticket sales when most games are already sold out. Unless they add more seats to Dodgers stadium, which seems unlikely since they just completed a huge remodel of the outfield seats and pavilion a couple years ago. They might get away with raising ticket prices a little, and no one will be that shocked when the Micheladas go past $30. I remember when the Dodgers signed Hideo Nomo (2nd Japanese-born player in the league), they added sushi to the concessions and capitalized big with Japanese-themed souvenirs. I think the real money will be in the merch.
Also, I could be wrong about this, but I have a feeling Sho's $680m back salary will be converted to equity when he retires. We could be looking at a future team owner. Magic Johnson only has a 2.3% stake for his $50m investment, but he himself is one of the team's best assets the way he promotes it and acts as ambassador. Sho could do that too, and lure more top talent from Japan as well.

No, I don't see how it would come from ticket sales. Yes, the Dodgers have some of the top attendance in the league. I'm guessing tickets aren't super cheap either (I'm used to it too, I wish Yankee tickets were cheaper).

But I would think this would open a whole bunch of new marketing and rights deals across Asia. In a sport where there is not a lot of "different", he is "different", in the best way.

I had not thought of renegotiating the deal to an equity share at some point, but that would actually make a lot of sense.

I don't think I've ever had sushi at a ballgame. It feels a little out of place. But hey, I love sushi

I can’t believe it, as a Braves fan I was excited by the Dodgers signing Ohtani because 1. I knew AA would never pay for him so we were never going to get him and 2. It meant the Dodgers couldn’t get anyone else without taking a huge hit or spending even more. Nope 😫

Sho has spent several years with the Angels now and knows damn well that 1 or two superstars don't equal a team. He was tired of him and Trout having to carry the whole damn organization on their backs, when they were healthy, and wanted a real TEAM to back him up. The deferrals were his idea because he knows his salary is more than some of the poverty franchises alone, and wanted his new organization to still be able to field a competitive team around him. The man wants some championships more than the money.

Given they've got 10 years to start coming up with they cash, there are going to be a lot of creative financing options available more than just using baseball revenue (ticket sales and TV money) to come up with it.

Hell, they can probably just bank the increased revenue they are going to get across Asia for this move to easily cover it.

Ohtani also makes north of 40MM USD a year from endorsements, which is why he's able to do this

Just looked it up, and Dodgers have 15 years left on their $8.35b deal with Spectrum SportsNet LA.
And yeah, he won't be hurting with his $2m per year and $40m+ endorsements. I'm expecting that number to go up now that he's on a *real* LA market team. Angelenos absolutely do not claim the "Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim." Pitcher and Dodgers fan fave Joe Kelly just re-signed a 1-year $8m contract with them yesterday and doesn't have a fraction of the endorsements Ohtani does, yet Joe (and his wife) were happily giving up #17 to have him join the team. He'll be okay with $42m+ and some rings to help him sleep at night 🤣

It didn't make sense to me until I factored in the 40MM in endorsements. It's all monopoly money, he's got way more than he can ever spend.

From the east coast, the Angles just look like a poorly run organization. A few shiny pieces at the top but no structure below shame. It's a shame for Trout. I remember seeing him live his rookie year (didn't know a lot about him other than the hype), and was just totally blown away.

The TV money is all an inside deal anyway. Spectrum is half owned by Guggenheim, who is the majory owner of the Dodgers. The teams that own their own TV networks have been operating in a very different financial universe than the teams that don't.

The Dodgers and Ohtani are going to be just fine.

Despite being a Yankee fan, I do have a soft spot for the Dodgers. I spend a lot of years staying up late watching Dodger games just to listen to Vin Scully. He was the best.

Just saw this LA Times article about ways Dodgers could make the money from Sho’s contract back and thought of you. I was wrong about the merch and you were wrong about the broadcasting rights 😱 Had no idea they were both split across all teams in the league, with the exception of the stores the teams run in the stadium and a couple other sites! I was right about the attendance already being high at an average of 90% capacity though. The article also mentions a couple other possibilities I didn’t even think of, like stadium naming rights. Personally, I would hate to call it anything but Dodgers Stadium, Chavez Ravine or The Ravine. No one I know calls the former Staples Center by its new name, Crypto.com Arena or “The Crypt” either.

The next advertising step is selling the rights to the field name and the stadium name. Smaller market teams get twice the brand revenue and larger teams with a recognizable stadium can get something. That way you can have Literotica Field at Dodger Stadium.

Spring Training is kicking off soon. As a long time Dodgers fan I'm excited to see what this season has in store. Anything less than a world series win would be a huge let down to me.

I’m a Chicago White Sox fan. Anything less than 100 losses would be an absolute shock and delight. 😐

I’m looking forward to seeing some of the younger players on the Red Sox but I don’t really expect much from this team. Three things they need to be competitive….pitching, pitching and pitching.

I know this thread is about the MLB but I am so excited about this college baseball season. Go Hogs!

College ball is great. We get to enjoy the Ga Bulldogs a lot.... and an occasional Clemson game.
The stadiums are excellent. Great fun.
