Everything Baseball

I just wonder how Stanton and especially Judge feel about this trade. Bringing in Soto seems like they don't think that their bats are good enough. Judge and Soto both are right fielders. Then where do you put Verdugo.
The outfield will likely be Grisham (7), Judge (8), Soto (9), Verdugo as a platoon, and Stanton at DH. Stanton is likely "on notice" that he will lose his job if his production doesn't improve.

While the Yankees are likely to inquire with Soto’s representatives at the Boras Corporation about a possible long-term extension, it is widely expected he’s strictly a one-year rental.

Big trade for only one year? This same guy did turn down a 440 million dollar contract though...
The Yankees have one year to wine-and-dine him. He's smart to wait until Ohtani signs to see where the goal posts have moved. Harper signed the biggest contract in MLB (at the time) which is now in 8th or 9th place. Word is he is looking to sign an extension or rework his contract to get paid more.

Lots of good questions. I'll go ahead and answer a few. You may not have been looking for answers this in-depth, but I love talking about this game and you gave me a reason to do so (thank you).

The Yankees—even when bad—are never irrelevant. Folks around the world wear their hat who have never even seen a game. They almost never have years when they tank or do poorly on purpose. The roster has lots of high-caliber players, but a lot of those players are dealing with injuries and a few are just getting older and in the declining years of their contracts. I say all this as someone who passionately dislikes the Yankees.

Juan Soto is a proven defensive and offensive player. He is smart, he is a known star (butts in seats), and he is only twenty-six years old. He is an outfielder—something the Yankees desperately need—and he bats from the left side, another big need of the Yankees.

Juan Soto is also a "rental player", meaning he only has one year left on his contract before he is a free agent and able to sign a new contract with whichever team he chooses—which may or may not be the Yankees. The Yankees traded away mostly prospects—no guarantee that any of them because as productive as Juan Soto.

Basically, the Yankees sold the Padres four scratch-off lottery tickets for a known value. Only time will tell who "won" the trade.

Based on his calculated value as a pitcher, Ohtani's contract should be something like seven years and 300 million; based on his calculated value as a hitter something like seven years 325 million. Ohtani does both. He hits for power and throws 100MPH. Extremely valuable to an organization both as a player and, cynically, as a marketing tool. The Angels have made the playoffs once in the last decade, but their logo was everywhere because of Ohtani.

...wait, this is Literotica right? Hopefully someone finds all this nerdiness arousing.
To me..that makes the trade with the Padres worse. 7 players for one year. Those contracts can be used for trade capital elsewhere.. The Yankees need way more than one player. Seems to me it is just a way to silence the NY press but won't result in another WS victory

No one is worth 600 million. How many playoff games has Ohtani played in?

I appreciate the insight

None in MLB, but as you said in another post—it's a team sport. Getting to the playoffs is incredibly difficult to do as a team.

I laughed at Tristan Casas’ comment on the Yankees acquisitions of Verdugo and Soto. He said between the two of them, they’ll hit 60 home runs…..Soto 59 and Verdugo 1. Yes, he was kidding.

I am not a baseball fan...but maybe someone can explain how an irrelevant team can trade all that young talent for one person...and think that will make them relevant? Do people understand how much trade value the Padres received? The Padres won that trade. And the Yankees got one player that can hit.

I look at the Ohtani trade the same way. Amazing player. But is he worth the headaches he brings and the dollars that must be paid? No. Last I knew...baseball is a team sport.

Ohtani is an albatross. His best position is pitcher which he will not be able to play for 1-1/2 to 2 years. Some dumbass GM will way overpay for talents he lost with that ligament. At best for the next 2 years he is an above average DH. What is that worth?? Add to that he now seems to be smelling himself... thinks he is the top dog etc. I am sure that will fit in well in any of the clubhouses the overpay/underplay teams have. He is not worth the headaches.

I'd argue his batting is better than his pitching—even if he becomes more of a three true outcomes person. He won MVP twice in his three MLB seasons and was worth 10 WAR—a whole 2.7 wins more than the next person.

Who is going to pitch for the Yankees besides Cole.....what Cashman got up his pant leg next...

It’s going 15 yrs....since last champion..Pressure is mounting....
The Yankees have enough championships. While I particularly love watching the Mets disappoint their fans after the yearly ESPN hype, any NY baseball tears can be delicious.

I hate the Yanks...I am a Mets fan...don’t know exactly what they are doing besides changing management Again...WTH...

So besides Ocuna Jr and maybe Freddie Freeman, the best offensive player in the game isn’t worth it. Plus one of the best pitchers in the game after the 2024 season. He isn’t signing a short term contract. It will be a very long term contract. Which means he will be pitching for a majority of the contract along with the offensive numbers. Plus he is low maintenance, popular with fans, easy going. What am I missing? Yep he is the top dog, two straight MVP awards. He makes every team in the sport better.
Thanks for the reply. Yes he is a good player... really good. I do not think he will ever return to level he was prior to the UL injury. He will though get paid by some team as though he is 1 1/2 to 2 players in one ... and I anticipate that will cause issues for the high bidder for his services. See the Padres.

It will be fun to watch. I hope he lands with a team that he can lead to and win a series with.
