If teams are level on points on the completion of the group matches, the first criterion used to separate them will be head-to-head results, followed by goal difference in the matches between the teams. Below are all the criteria which will be used to determine the rankings:
List of criteria
a) Number of points obtained in the matches among the teams in question.
b) Goal difference in the matches among the teams in question.
c) Number of goals scored in the matches among the teams in question (if more than two teams finish equal on points).
d) Goal difference in all the group matches.
e) Number of goals scored in all the group matches.
f) Coefficient from the qualifying competitions for the 2002 FIFA World Cup and 2002/04 UEFA European Championship (points obtained divided by the number of matches played).
g) Fair play conduct of the teams in the final tournament.
h) Drawing of lots.
In games among the three teams, with Sweden and Denmark drawing 2-2, Sweden scored a total of 3 goals, Denmark 2 and Italy 1.![]()

Well then it is true, Italy had no chance at all.
It's kind of a strange thing though. I mean I guess in every league in every country where soccer is played it's points, over goal difference.
Are you kidding? If two teams are leveled on points overall of course that the sportsman's way of breaking the tie is, first of all, what happens in the matches between them. What is the importance of who whipped the last team of the group's ass the strongest? It's head-to-head that should count.SnoopDog said:It's kind of a strange thing though. Who gives a damn about only the games between teams that have equal number of points.
If a team has over-all managed to score a lot of goals and didn't get them in return it should have the nick over teams that didn't score at all, no matter how they played each other.
I think sometimes UEFA and FIFA just lose sight of the sport.

In group A, if Portugal had drawn with Spain, things would have ended with:
Spain - 5
Greece - 4
Portugal - 4
Russia - 3
In this case, who would give a damn about their results against Spain and Russia? Greece won against Portugal, so they should take 2nd place. Do you think it would be more sportsmanlike to give 2nd place to Portugal just because they beat Russia 2-0?
You're right about one thing: "in every league in every country where [football] is played, it's points over goal difference." Of course.
Except they ended with the same points. And the same points between them. Goal difference is the only tie-breaker left.
These are the rules in every UEFA and FIFA competition and in every national championship I have ever heard of. You should really check the rules used over on the German FA website. I don't believe this system isn't used over there as well.![]()
