Euro2004 support thread

But this is why we love football, isn't it?

Laughing and crying so close. World can be build and fall apart in seconds. Pure emotion, suspense, joy, celebration or deepest sadness.

Oh boy...

P H E W !

Well, Italian papers can write whatever they want to, I really couldn't care less, and that was no giveaway from any side. Too bad I've got an early morning tomorrow, this would had been the perfect opportunity to celebrate by getting so pissed it's silly.

Whoop!

I know one italian journalist that are sad now. He had managed to sneek in to our hotel and was on his way to send a fax to the danes with a suggestion to play 2 - 2.

What a scoop for him if he had succeeded.

Great entertainment, with the right and fair result. Italy should have had it sewn up before tonight, hell, you would never get England or Portugal leaving it to the last game of the qualifying round. :D

Got the Predictor right, pushed me up a few places, just a small problem of who to support and which FF team to pick for Thursday.

hmmm, what was that? No last minute dodgy pass backs, no goalie deciding to chop down the attacker in the penalty box...

I don't think there was any playing for a 2 all draw, but now I think of it maybe we should investigate the England team for any strange betting they may have placed before the France game....

:p

Because Italy could have won 100-1 and would have been out nonetheless.

Hä? Why that? If they would have won 4-1 they would have shot more than second place Danes and would have advanced if I am not mistaken.

The Sweden game was a right FIX

last min goals to make it 2 - 2 yeah like I didn't know that would happen thats why I got the draw right on the Predictor :D

Level on points
If teams are level on points on the completion of the group matches, the first criterion used to separate them will be head-to-head results, followed by goal difference in the matches between the teams. Below are all the criteria which will be used to determine the rankings:

List of criteria
a) Number of points obtained in the matches among the teams in question.
b) Goal difference in the matches among the teams in question.
c) Number of goals scored in the matches among the teams in question (if more than two teams finish equal on points).
d) Goal difference in all the group matches.
e) Number of goals scored in all the group matches.
f) Coefficient from the qualifying competitions for the 2002 FIFA World Cup and 2002/04 UEFA European Championship (points obtained divided by the number of matches played).
g) Fair play conduct of the teams in the final tournament.
h) Drawing of lots.

In games among the three teams, with Sweden and Denmark drawing 2-2, Sweden scored a total of 3 goals, Denmark 2 and Italy 1. ;)

Du hast recht !

It's what they said on tv all the time and at first I thought it had something to do with the game Italy-Denmark but I checked it and you're absolutely right.

However, 4-1 would have been pretty impossible anyways, since there were only 20 minutes or so to go and Italy hadn't managed to get the past the 1-1 for such a long time.

Is that true???? Didn't know that.
Well then it is true, Italy had no chance at all. :(

It's kind of a strange thing though. I mean I guess in every league in every country where soccer is played it's points, over goal difference.
Who gives a damn about only the games between teams that have equal number of points.
If a team has over-all managed to score a lot of goals and didn't get them in return it should have the nick over teams that didn't score at all, no matter how they played each other.
I think sometimes UEFA and FIFA just lose sight of the sport.

Anyways, today is the big game for me, oh boy. I just hope germany will do the trick. *keeps paws crossed*

Decision time. I desperately want Portugal to go through but fear they will not, I'm pretty sure France will go through. So, I've hedged my bets and gone for a largely English/France team with A Swede and a Greek, couldn't afford any more Frenchmen!

If England lose, I'll switch them for Portuguese for the semi's.

Yeah ... here its also points over goal difference. But I thought the overall goal difference in group matches would come before goals shot in direct matchups.

Are you kidding? If two teams are leveled on points overall of course that the sportsman's way of breaking the tie is, first of all, what happens in the matches between them. What is the importance of who whipped the last team of the group's ass the strongest? It's head-to-head that should count.

In group A, if Portugal had drawn with Spain, things would have ended with:

Spain - 5
Greece - 4
Portugal - 4
Russia - 3

In this case, who would give a damn about their results against Spain and Russia? Greece won against Portugal, so they should take 2nd place. Do you think it would be more sportsmanlike to give 2nd place to Portugal just because they beat Russia 2-0?

You're right about one thing: "in every league in every country where [football] is played, it's points over goal difference." Of course.

Except they ended with the same points. And the same points between them. Goal difference is the only tie-breaker left.

These are the rules in every UEFA and FIFA competition and in every national championship I have ever heard of. You should really check the rules used over on the German FA website. I don't believe this system isn't used over there as well. ;)

Lauren... Don't hope for too many points today... The Czech team isn't gonna play Nedved... Koller and Baros they are all gonna be rested...

YAY!!!!

Well in the german league if two or more teams finish with the same ammount of points scored the goal difference of ALL played games counts and brings the decision. If the teams have the same goald difference as well the ammount of goals scored in ALL games count.
No one gives a damn about only the games the teams have played each other.

And what says more about the skill (and thereby the right to advance) of a team ? The goals scored in one game or in all games?
I like this system and yes if a team is capable of whiiping another teams ass better than the other it should advance.
That's my opinion plus I think it's much clearer and fairer than this. Take yesterday for example. If Italy HAD won 6-1 and the other game went 2-2 I think Italy should have advanced. Clear and simple.

The only thing I can give you is that it might, repeat MIGHT, result in unfair situations if Bulgaria had decided to let Italy win 6-1 which in my system would have let them advance. But then again this is a problem of fairness by the teams participating.

So...

I think you have one HUGE difference between a national league and a qualification round in the europeans and that is that you play between 20 and 40 games in a national league and three here.

Some teams show a lot of heart like Russia did earlier this week but just look at earlier championships where some teams loose 0-4, 1-7 and results like that in the last round.
