No it wasnt a good game from the portugese. The russians were one man short and nearly evened the score ... all they needed was a bit more luck and they would have gotten their goal.

This Portugese team will get creamed by the Spanish ...

Seriously ... thats not meant as an offense, the Portugese didnt play that great against a undermanned Russian Team. Right now the Spanish are far superior. Portugal will have to show a lot more than this excuse for a ballgame today to win against Spain.

They didn't play well against Russia's 10, but by then the pressure was completely off. For those familiar with this Portuguese team, the first half was a clear indication that they have more than what it takes to outplay a Spanish side that is far from their best form as well. Portugal played well enough and got a result good enough to make sure that dimwit manager won't fuck up the line-up again. Maybe he'll even include Ronaldo a bit sooner.

Well, I'll second that. The only team I saw was Portugal. Well, Russia had its moments of course and I do admit that after the red card they grew stronger and Portugal had a lot of trouble profiting from the red card. But honestly, they did WAY better than in the first game and they were able to cope with the pressure of being eliminated in their 'home' tournament.
Actually I'm not so sure about the Portugal-Spain game. Could be a tough one. The big advantage that Spain has is Raul and Morientes though.

It's not that unusual for the team with ten men to play better, seen that too many times.

The Portugal / Spain game will be intense, you have to take Greece to beat Russia so both P & S have to win to be sure of going through. If Ronaldo gets on earlier to give Portugal width and crosses I think they could do it. If you could have heard the noise here last night after each Portuguese goal and for three hours after the match, you would have thought Portugal had won the tournament.

My big fear is nerves, will Portugal 'bottle' when they need the win? Didn't last night but they almost stopped playing the first half after they got the first goal. Can't do that against Spain.

Got 20 points yesterday for FF and full points in Predictor. Today England.

Randi was the big winner yesterday on predictor - that still stays very close.

What is it with Spain and their inability to finish off games they are clearly winning? They had the game against Greece in the bag, but threw it away. I think they have the edge on Portugal, and seeing as the last game is now effectively a knock-out game to see who goes through with Greece, it should be Spain, but who knows? I would hate to see it happen for Laur's sake, but with four Spaniards in my Fantasy team, I have little choice but to support Spain!

Three Englishmen (and a Croat!) in the mix for me today, so I am just a leeeetle over-invested in England beating the Swiss.

You're forgetting that the midfield and defense that played yesterday was that same that had kept Morientes and Pršo, this year's Champions League top scorers, from making a single shot on goal worthy of the name. The Portugal that played yesterday can hold Spain indefinitely. If Scolari brings in Ronaldo for Simão and Nuno Gomes for Pauleta, though, Portugal will win. No doubt about it.

I agree with you that that is a better line-up, Lauren. At the very least, Ronaldo needs to come on earlier to make an impact.

I partly agree with you about the Portuguese defence... but this is a different situation to the Champions League. I think Spain have some good options in attack - though it irritates me how they never finish off moves that have killed opponents.

If I was a Portugal fan, I think what would worry me even more is that you guys don't just have to stop Spain, you have to score and win. You didn't look good against Greece, my grannie could have scored against a beaten Russian team - where are you going to hurt Spain?

Of course, knowing my skills at prediction, this will be a nine-goal thriler.
