Endless Ends

Sailing becomes social at the marina or sailing club if you have memberships. There are get-togethers and community events as well as helping each other out with projects.

I have my own boat and am still in the learning, class-taking process, so no crew or large.

Oh, I see. More the social around the sport than the sport itself being social.

It sounds lovely. The sailing itself, not the attendant socializing. In case that wasn’t clear. ;)

I swear. If I didn’t have mild asthma I’d totally be on the fence as to the repetitive Covid vaccine shots. Every installment has kicked my derriere.

Holy. Weaponized. Kittens.

After driving 3 hours I have dosed myself with Tylenol and now crawl to the couch to vegetate.

*dying*

This better be over tomorrow.

I HAVE A BATHROOM TO FINISH

Has anyone seen The Ninth Guest (1934)? A lovely little pre-code murder mystery based on a 1930s book that pre-dates Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None (1939), yet has a similar plot.

I feel like I should have seen this before, but I’m about 20 minutes in and it’s not ringing any bells.…

I hear you. Had my booster on Wednesday and was crap all day Thursday.

Alright you two. Surely 8008 is stretching it. I mean, those 8s do not look like Bs.

(I mean, I’m hardly surprised at HW, give his fascination with feminine secondary sex characteristics. But Ben backing him up is just enabling. :p)

I have to disagree with you on this. 8008 upside down looks exactly like 8008, regardless of the font. That makes it an ambigram.

On a 7-segment LCD calculator display (and I did specify the calculator display), the 8's look much more like B's than they do in a standard text font.

No, the 8's don't look EXACTLY like B's, and for that matter the Zero's don't look exactly like O's either. But it is close enough that calculator nerds have been snickering over 8008 since the days pocket calculators first appeared on the market (circa 1974).

Just google "BOOBS on a calculator" and you can readily see that you are arguing against 47 years worth of well established calculator geekdom.

I grant the ambigram status. It’s the resemblance to the word I challenge. However, far be it from me to argue with 47 years of established geekdom!

Vive les 8008s!

When people say “I Love You”, I think they really mean “You make me feel good”. At least in the case of romantic love. If they reach a time and place where the object of their affections no longer makes them feel good, they no longer love.

Not in every case, of course, but often. There’s usually a lot of justifications tossed about, mostly to ease the path of moving on, but I think that’s what most people mean.

No quibble with the temporary sentiment. People feel how they feel, and everyone loves differently. What bugs me is the word choice. It seems to me that love is enduring, not some ephemeral emotion. Not that I have a better word. Infatuation and lust are too temporary. And it’s not like the definition of love actually includes enduring as a descriptor, but….

We need a wider range of words to indicate types of love.

Idk, maybe it’s just me.

It usually is. :p

(Now see? This is the kind of overthinking that happens when I’m trapped on the couch due to illness. 😂 )

It is strange that you can tell your dog, grandma and wife/girlfriend “I love you” and have it mean all kinds of different things.

I think it’s also one of those feelings that no word can do justice to.

I’ve been in a few relationships that were hot, fun, exciting, incredible, but was I in love? I don’t think so. At least not the kind of love everybody sings about and write poems of. If those things were love then it is grossly overrated and certainly ticking by on an infatuation egg timer.

Can love be defined by a comfort level? Old people who have been together so long they can’t imagine life without the other person even if they never really say it or show it?

Maybe the most complicated use of the word love is when you have friends of the opposite sex that you love but are not "in love" with. What words do you use to express it without creating confusion or awkwardness.

I think "love" is used too often in describing "strong likes", as in "I love pancakes on Sunday", "I love that movie", or "I love doing what I do" . . . and in a way that lessens the impact of "love" when used sometimes in relationships.

Both hotoldguy and hotwords touched on that when they said essentially that "in love" has a stronger/deeper meaning. And "in love" can be expressed just as well in actions and not just words.

The Greeks had words for eight kinds of love:

Eros (passionate love) ...
Pragma (enduring love) ...
Ludus (playful love) ...
Agape (universal love) ...
Philia (deep friendship) ...
Philautia (self-love) ...
Storge (familial love) ...
Mania (obsessive love)

I think only one of those applies to "I am in love with you."

Comfort Love is a Thing! It might be a habit or it might be enduring, either way probably an important component of those impressively long marital relationships.

Indubitably. I love my bestie. I tell her so. Male friends are a little more tricky. at least if they're hetero. A longer duration of relationship probably helps, but there's so often a underlying sexual current. I don't know that I've ever had a male friend I thought viewed my in a completely platonic way.

Or maybe they did.

I'm probably overly suspicious. 😂

Wow! Nice pull!

-It seems like HW may have experienced Ludus in his relationships. And Comfort Love might be…idk, Pragma, Philia, or Storge? I wonder if the Greeks combined the types?

-hotoldrguy* described Philia.

(I find it impossible condense your handle into a nickname, btw. 😂 )

-Romantic love seems to be Eros, but I've always seen being IN love as something closer to Eros and Pragma rolled into one.

(Don't mind me. I'm just an outlier. :p)

Not practical, certainly. To fall in love under those conditions is fraught with much risk. What if you love Eros/Pragma romantically, but your partner only loves Eros? It would be like...one partner mating for life what the other does not. All kinds of inconvenient, at the very least. At worst…well, there's certainly potential for great suffering.

*Totally agree on the word love being overused. I wonder when that type of blanket usage started? You know it started as some kind of faddy trend.

Or, it (in love) could be a combination of all of those types of love.

I was going to argue Philautia, but turns out there's two versions. The positive is self-compassion. A building block for the ability to *in love* well?

I buy it.

I love this post. :D

Smarty pants. :p

S.M.A.R.T.Y. P.A.N.T.S.

It was probably me. I’m really into myself. :p

And then there's the negative version. :D

Oh. My. Goodness.

Sothebys? This is for realz?

I wanna be prepared….

Do they make reproductions?

Dang it, Investor! You lured me. I intended to leave off posting until after the new year. (Busy, busy.)

Lure-er.

:p

Welp.

My December has imploded. The year of 2021.

Keeps. On. Happening.

Where is my *something needs to happen* thing?

WHERE

It’s been three weeks since I put in my official request….

Just In case it wasn’t clear, Universe, I meant something good!

I’m ready.

*waits*

*impatiently*

So. Since life insists on continuing to throw curve balls, a little distraction seemed in order.

That means?

Delving into antique vampire killing kits. :p

Seems like there’s a thriving business in fraudulent productions. As in the thousands of dollars. They’ll have bits and bobs that are old incorporated with *aged* newer items. No providence, of course. Auction houses that sell fall back on lack of suitable authenticators. Uh huh.

I still want one.

Fortunately -

- I found a link that chronicles making one’s own. :p

Though, perhaps, a Creatures of the Night kit appeals more. You know, more versatile. *nods*

There are also options for reputable purchase. Not antique, but much more reasonably priced.

LOL. I simply can't turn down the lure of a good rabbit hole. :p

Besides, living rural a girl has to be prepared. For snakes and spiders and stuff, but also vampires, werewolves, wraiths, necromancers, zombies, and what have you.

You know, sensible precautions.
