A quick question to people.

For the emergency services in Australia, you simply dial 000.

I think England is 111 and everyone knows the US is 911.

Is it still 911 in Canada?

Anyone know the number for any other country in the world?

Yes I know i have a weird mind at times :D

Yeah dialling 111 will get you noticed in New Zealand.

I believe in Spain it's 066. I always had the phone book handy so I never bothered to remember though.

What if the phone book had caught on fire, and you need to call the "El Fiero Departmento?" What then? Huh?

If my apartment was on fire, I wouldn't stop to call the bomberos, I'd get the hell outta there! :p

And lose your phone book?

Hmm, that's true. It actually wasn't a phone book, it was a QDQ (koo-day-koo) and had all kinds of good local information in it.

It would have been a great loss. :(

Luckily, the only thing that ever got set on fire was the couch, even then for a very brief period.

The emergency number in Britain is 999.

I think it was chosen because at the time, most phones had dials and the number nine was the shortest to dial.

Anyone remember an old song by Motorhead, it goes:

" Nine, nine, nine - emergency, emergency..."

Honest? On American dial phones, the 9 is second longest to dial, 0 being the longest.

You're right I just checked it out. I think the design must be universal, Americas, Britain, Australia etc.

I'm mistaken, I've got it garbled. It's the other way around, it looks like the shortest dial number, 111, was not chosen because of the likehood of false calls being triggered accidently.

Apparentlly, technical issues relating to the modification of public pay phones played a part in the choice of 999 as the emergency number.

Additional info, Britain was the first country to have a universal emergency number in 1937.

Oooooh! That's going back a bit! '81? '82?

That was originally a Girlschool song that Motorhead covered on the 'HeadGirl' St Valentines Massacre EP. "Please Don't Touch" with Motorhead and Girlschool, with Motorhead covering Emergency and I think Girlschool did Bomber.

I have it somewhere but not to hand.

Number 9, number 9, number 9.....

Oh, I get it now! Why don't they have a universal phone code like ***? With all this anti-terrorism/world domination talk going on, why not?
Damn, I miss rotary phones!
