I want to purchase my first DVD player, but isn't it only as good as the rest of the video and audio system connected to it?

So, what do I really want to have connected to the DVD? What do you have and how do you like it? What brands should I stay away from and what brands are worth the money?

First and foremost, DVD players cannot be hooked up to VCRs. Every DVD player is designed to protect the DVD from copy. Next, if you TV supports s-vidoe or component hook up, use them. Also, a 5.1 Doby Digital Reciever is a must for good sound, make sure that it has optical sound hook ups, most good ones do. Finally spend the extra money on the s-video and fiber optic cables, you will notice a differance from even the quality of your standard television. If you have enough money laying around, get a wide screen HD TV as well. You wont regret it.

I have ALL Sony equipment, from my Receiver to DVD to CD Changer to Cassette Deck (they still do have those around you know) to TV to VCR.

I like Sony for one reason, you may not get the BEST features but you will get a better variety of features for the buck. I usually keep my system in tact for 5 years in between upgrades.

I have B & W Speakers front, rear and center channel with an Energy 12 inch subwoofer........

I will give you all the model numbers of what I have currently if you like, though they are at least a year old.

My receiver is Sony ES, as is my CD Changer. DVD is a 5 Disc Carousel.

The DVD is only as good as the TV, Sound System you are playing with...........TV sucks, the picture will too, but on the other hand if the TV is Marginal or Mediocre then it will be Mediocre at best, now my TV isn't top of the line but it is about 75% of the way up the tree and it ROCKS.

My receiver rocks as do the speakers I have.

PM me if you like and I will let you know what I can...........;)

Nice to see ya btw.

i got a cheap lg dvd and the picture compared to video is awesome, get one that plays dvds from more than one region and you will be able to get cheap imported dvds from the far east

pablo is correct, get the one that plays ALL REGIONS.

Be careful where you buy it from, because they may think it will play ALL regions when in reality it will not.......usually though you can check with your local retailer and see. In fact, the instrutions or information packet that comes with it should tell the story.

if i am correct , the us is region 1 europe region 2 and the rest of the world is region 3 .......it will say in the destruction book

Thanks all for your input.

Chuckus, after I visit Circuit City and before I purchase I will PM or email you with what I think I want to get.

okay Tony.

I would warn you away from the "lesser" brands if you wanna go High Tech, but I also understand budget constraints.

Are you going after a total system? TV, DVD, Speakers,etc.....?
