Being a HUGE fan of these quarky reality shows (Ax Men, Swamp Wars, Shipping Wars, Storage Wars, Gold Rush, etc.) I was excited to watch Doomsday Preppers.

What a bunch of dummies on that show though.

There are two basic types of these wacky people: Those that are stockpiling to hunker down; and, those who are honing survival skills to live off the land. It depends on the scenario one is prepping for.

The Hunker Downers: One guy had 80 guns. They were all different kinds. It seems to me you'd be better with a bunch of long guns, a bunch of shot guns, and a bunch of hand guns. I'd get the exact same model of each category so you have redundancy in parts, and consistent ammo. What happens if you are under attack and all you have within reach is .45 ammo and you are using the .223? None of them had enough water. You'd need a stainless steel tank that holds several thousand gallons.

The Survivalists: This one dumb woman was explaining her plan to escape Houston, but when put to the test, she couldn't hump her pack outside the city limits.

I reckon I'd be more of a Survivalist than a Hunker Downer. The Hunker Downers would be vulnerable to a siege attack from a marauding gang. I think I'd prefer my chances living alone in the woods.

According the the Zombie Survival Guide it's best to be a combination of the two. You want a home base where you can rest and be reasonably safe but you also need to know how to live off the land because nobody is supplying anything anymore.
I'm gonna have to agree that that is the best way to go.

I read the title as "Doomsday Peppers"

And after reading what the show is about...I think my version would have been funnier....

You're right about the ammo. It's one reason the military uses consistent sizes. Not only is it easier to supply and store but it's also easier to scrape up out in the field if you need to. If everyone is using something different then you have more supply and storage problems than you can handle.

You'd be ok. You could be the quiet one with tiny daggers hidden in her belt.

I'd also want a cross bow. Not just because they are cool, but because you can sometimes recover the arrows.

I saw both of those shows a week or more ago as I was folding laundry! :D Though I think quite a bit of it is hooey, I believe in the "Bug Out Bag", and have a root cellar that is equipped to shelter my family for the 72 hours our government suggests.

Poison is hard to come by and if it's a zombie scenario then it's useless even if you have it. Best just to be a good shot.

ok. I can be that. I've great hand/eye coordination. And the last time I went to a shooting range, I shot the target *which was an outline of a guy* right in the balls...or at least what would be the sack area.

and as there is limited noise you will not attract the other zombies.......

On a side note, I watched about 4 of the gold rush shows in a row early Sunday. I am sure they were all repeats but I can not understand why I could not turn it off. That 17 year old kid is pretty bad ass.

They had all different scenarios, but I don't think zombies was one of them. Perhaps in the next episode. I think the EMP knocking out the grid was the most plausible.

One guy thought the Earth's magnetic poles would shift, causing a massive re-orientation of the continents. He was a bit out there.

I'm told that Ted Kacyzski's Montana cabin is available. In realtor-speak, there's said to be a "motivated seller."
