Domme, Domina, Dominatrix? Is there a difference?

Subish male who is confused about terminology. I have looked them up and all share the same definition. Is it a matter of preference or are there subtle nuances?

She'll tell you, Philos.

Some High Protocol prefer Goddess.

And I can think of at least one that demands Master.

Just about all I can think off will tell you that you should not start off addressing them as such, but as either their chosen username or Ma'am until they give you permission and tell you which title they prefer.

***sigh*** And I just got told off.

Fine!

Apparently, Dominatrix = Dominant and Domme = Dom, but certain circles didn't like the latter, so it became Domina to better match the word it was short for. However, there is an undercurrent that prefers Dominant or Dom for either gender with "no diminuative additions."

(Is that better, Twinkle Tits? :D)

(Actually, she would beat the hell out of me if she could stop laughing when I do.)

(In my defense, have you never seen the way the light plays off a metal-studded bustier and not been able to get "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" out of your head? No? Maybe that's just me.)

In my experience, the PYL/pyl labels vary by those who use them. Each person has their own preferences and it may or may not be the same with another partner. Alas, they are just labels.

*Here’s a great classic thread on the general topic of labels: http://forum.literotica.com/showthread.php?t=1360492

*PYL = Pick Your Label of the Dominant/Top variety
*pyl = pick your label of the submissive/bottom variety

I remember this thread. Thank you for reposting it here.

I met a few dominatrixes, quite by accident in NYC. They are not shy about instructing men as to how to address them. They have a nose for sub men and generally pass over more Dominant men when we fail to react to them.

I was told that a domme and domina are the same. They are dominate females . Where a dominatrix is a person who is paid for their services.

And when pronounced Domme is said the same as Dom the ‘me’ is silent at the end. This is a great real world test, if someone says Dom-me they probably have developed their understanding of kink and BDSM from written communication.
Domina is a way to verbally identify someone is female and a dominant — because Domme is said the same as Dom therefore doesn’t identify the gender of the dominant.
Dominatrix is usually reserved for professional dominants who have a criteria of payment rather than connection with a bottom/submissive/client. If someone self titles as a dominatrix you can probably also expect to pay for or give gifts for their services as a dominant.

But as said before, there are no hard and fast rules, it’s about what the person or people in the dynamic choose to use that works for them.

Dominants. "Dominate" is a thing someone does, not what they are: a dominant (person) will dominate a submissive.

(I wouldn't usually nitpick that, but since this is a terminology thread, probably best to be picky.)
