Does writing about sex ever become a chore?

I used to really enjoy writing about the sex. Now I just want to focus on the plot and characters. I still want it to be erotica, but honestly...writing the actual sex has become boring. Does this ever happen to anyone? If so, what did you do about it?

Plot and characterization never ruined a great sex story. ;)

Oh no, ofcourse not. That's not what I'm saying. I'm saying that I'll really enjoy writing the dialogue and such, but then when it comes time to write about the actual sex I'll be like **SIGH** "Ok, well let's get this over with". I'm BORED with writing about sex. Which sucks cos I still want to write erotica.

Its a chore for me, and has been for awhile now. I'd much rather write the story than the sex. I suppose that's why much of what I've written lately doesn't appear on Lit.

*gasp!*

It doesn't???

How dare you show your face around here, you wanna-be writer!

OH, sorry. I was channeling someone else for a moment, there.

UN, in all seriousness this has been discussed before. I remember Imp and Belegon talking about it, and how Bel was into some serious writing and came to a sex scene and how he skipped the sex scene to handle the plot intricacies. He'd placed lettering to the extent of "Insert Sex Here" or some such.

Hey - when you're on a writing roll, don't stop!

I do that...I put "they fuck here" and either come back to it, or work the story so that I just sort of fade out at that moment. Sex scenes are boring to me to write. There's only so many ways to write them.

You know, I like that. I might just add that to my signature line.

"Fuck Here"

Or maybe on a T-shirt. "Fuck This"

What do you think?

:)

I like "fuck this." It can be taken so many different ways. ;)

lol. think Trom just posted about this in the Blurt thread...
Yeah I sure did. :p I've been writing a story for a while now. It includes a a lot of battling (Something I like to write and feel like I do well) and then the two main characters have sex at the end. Lately all my stories feel like the sex was just thrown in at the end to make it erotica. Now I'm at the end of the story where they're having sex and I find it really hard to get myself to write. Frankly I should have been done two or three days ago, but I've been intentionally sidetracking myself. Also I'm not very happy at all with the oral sex part. Been thinking of getting some people to read it and give me their opinion of it.

On the plus side, I do have several stories in the works that focus more on sex than this one does. Suddenly had a rush of ideas go through my head at once. :p

I made a t-shirt that says Fuh-Q on it.

Not quite the same, I know. But hey, it got a few laughs. And dirty looks. Which ALWAYS makes it worthwhile.

I can understand not feeling inspired to write about the sex if the sex feels forced into the story.

Yes, it does.

I've come to think of writing a sex scene as being similar in many ways to any other "action" sequence (fight, chase, etc.). Doing them well is a chore. As others have mentioned, I sometimes leave myself a note about a major sex scene, then come back when I've finished the first draft and flesh it out.

Gawd. That's me, exactly. I've only submitted 2-1/2 stories and the sex just isn't good for me anymore. ;) Seriously, my holiday story has the sex at the end, which I don't like anyway, but it just seems kind of ho-hum to me. I was just thinking about working on it when I saw this thread.

The last story I wrote had no sex in it at all. So I tried to find a place to put a sex scene and just couldn't fit it in. I'm letting that one die, but I hate to think writing sex is going to be a chore for me from now on.

So, what's the answer?

Sarahh:

I'm flattered that you remember that. It tickled the Impster immensely.

I think that it just depends on where my head is at... right now, it is difficult for me to write sex in a normal manner. It's one reason I'm happy to have the editing work. But my writing muse will return. I just need to get my head straight.

Writing any scene can be a chore for me, writing any scene can flow and be fun. Yes, I feel the pressure to try and have variety in my scenes. But remember, just because you've written it before doesn't mean the reader is sitting there doing a monolouge on how you are repeating yourself.

How many times have you done a certain sexual act in your life? Wasn't it different with different people? Of course.

The only advice I can give is to try to let the individuality of your characters shine through...

I think everyone who writes erotic stories for any length of time goes through this. There's a definite hot novelty the first few times of describing a sexual encounter in lurid detail. But at some point, it becomes less of a thrill, and more of a chore. A particularly inspired situation might be fun to write, but a basic, bread-and-butter "They undressed each other, touched each other's bodies, gave some oral sex, and screwed in X and Y position" can be tough to force yourself to write.

Generally, I try to write what I'm in the mood for. If I'm horny, the sex scenes come easier (bad pun). When I'm not in the mood as much, I'll focus on other parts of the story, and just put [insert sex scene here], or else block out the basics of it to flesh the details later.

The great thing if you're writing as a hobby rather than for profit is you can take time off whenever you want to. If the words aren't flowing, do something else, and come back to it at a later date.

The major reason why this is a problem is because I incorporate the sex scenes into the storyline. For example, a character won't let another one go down on her during sex, but other sexual things happen. We find out later that there's a particular reason for that that becomes part of the plot in later chapters, so it's a detail that I can't leave out. So it's kind of dangerous for me to skip over sex and just write "sex scene here".

So write [insert sex scene here. X tries to go down on Y, gets rebuffed, they snog, then fuck doggy style]

Does that mean you can write it in an abnormal manner? If so, hop to it! Abnormal sex is FUN!

:p

ungenderless --

Any aspect of writing can be a chore if you're not in the right frame of mind to tackle it. I find that the toughest sex scenes to write are ones in which the characters want to have one type of sex (maybe, for example, tender) and I want a hard fuck against the wall.

I find that some intense ... um ... meditation of the battery-operated variety helps a great deal.

:)

I have a story part written. The sex is integral. I stalled part way through the main sex scene a couple of months ago. Got back to it this week. Got a bit burther, but still haven't finished that scene.
Not sure this story will ever get finished.

Well it's great to know that I'm not the only one having this issue, lol.

Not even close, lol.

I've got great gaping holes in my three otherwise completed novels because I can't force myself to write the sex scenes.

But slowly, I'm getting there. Like, one sentence a day, slowly.
